Mate if your fishing in the river for bream, flathead or whiting just take your barra gear and tie a good 4-5m of about 12lb mono on the end. Beach fishing you will probably need a bit of a longer rod to help with casting. Spin gear that you use to chase longtail would also be good enough to chase tailor, salmon, bream and smaller jew. Buy all your terminal tackle down there. That way you can have a chat to the tackle store owner to get you started on spots to fish.

I grew up and did a lot of rock fishing in Port Macquarie but not sure about the rock fishing down that way near Newcastle. You would need more specialised gear for this anyway

Mate there are several options. Outside is still good fishing for usual species.
Inside lake macquarie is good fishing for the small stuff like flathead, bream, whiting etc
there is also newy harbour.
Watch out for the big boats. they will run over you without seeing you

Stockton Beach has outstanding beach fishing, Boat Harbour is good for blackfish, Cowrie Hole has some monster sharks, the rocks between Susan Gilmore and South Newcastle beaches are pretty good as well, but be careful, it can get pretty hairy on the rocks. As kids we used to fish the rocks at the Bogey Hole tying ourselves to the chain fence so we wouldn't get washed off............
