Ron,

Most lenses have a minimum focus distance. For a long lens like a 200mm it could be as far as 1200mm on a smaller 24mm lens that distance could be 300-600mm. On a zoom lens his distance may vary as the focal length changes.

Generally you'd need a Macro lens to get up close to an object (a foot or less) or a macro filter / attachment that reduces the focal length.

Its all to do with the Lens, different ones have different minimum focasing distances, ifyou want close up, Macro type shots of inscts and stuff, you ll need a Macro lens , or one that offers a short focasing length.

Ive had a couple of Tamro 28/200 & 28/300 lenses, but the early ones wont focus closer than 6feet......

Go taslk to a decent camera shop
