vernon island jew and snapper help

Post by Mick_F »

Hi All,

Just looking for some info on fishing for snapper and jew around the vernon island area. Ive been fishing vernons for about 12 months and do ok on pelagics and reefies but havent scored a jew or snapper there yet. Ive tried in the channel between NW & NE island on the ledges for no luck. Got a feeling I may have been in the wrong area.
Can I trouble anyone for starter marks that will put me in the right area to start my drift.

Much appreciated,
Mick.

There's some interesting ground well before the Vernons as you are heading over by sea from Darwin. I've seen loads of bottom fish on the sounder there, but as it has always been on way over to the Vernons, I never fished it hard.

Those deep channels are hit and miss. Some fellas get good bottom fish but most go there for pelagics.

The creek and blue hole on the island are worth a look on a decent tide, some good jacks, and ooglies like Qld groper and diamond trevs.

Try the channel between southwest Vernon and Gunnpoint, have caught both jewies and goldies, just anchor on the edges and fish the east end of the channel on the northern side.

The 120 foot marks are the best. Don't bother fishing deeper as you generally only get sharks.

Don't be afraid to get as shallow as 4m for good goodies
