Melville - Cobham Bay

Post by NT Mick »

Heading out to Melville next week and plan to have a poke around Cobham Bay/Camp Point area.
I see theres a creek (3rd one down from Camp Point) that appears worth a try for Barra, Jacks and the usuals.
Has anyone fished the creek in particular? How did they go or was it a waste of time?
Its roughly 8.5k's down the coast from the Main Camp Point Creek mouth........
Or if you have a good spot your willing to share that is worth a look, i'll obviously take it on board

Cheers

Mate I haven't fished them but have read many articles over the years from people who have. They are all worth a try and fish good some day and not so good the next, like anywhere else. They should hold barra, jacks, blue and threadfin salmon. Like anywhere do the miles get the smiles so the ones north of camp point prob better in my opinion. Cheers

Hi NT Mick,
I fish there regularly.....big difference is that I fly fish those areas which is completely different to what you will be doing.

Camp Point is very exposed to the weather and can chop up easily. It is a poop of a run from Leaders when it is rough.....I could continue for ages on this by-line but will cease and desist here. Camping is great but be VERY Careful of the lizards...

Here are sone fishing hints for Camp Point:

Creek at 11Deg 35.45S 131Deg 23.000E
fishes well. Good deep channel at the back with plenty of jacks and barra amongst the snage. Some really good shallow snags at the mouth on the bottom of the tide and first part of theincoming.

Creek at 11deg 36.200S 131deg 22.300E
Shallow entrance but not too bad when you get into the creek. Plenty of barra and jacks off every snag.

Any creek west of there is a waste of time as it is too shallow and it dries of a low tide.

I would probably recommend heading over to Robertson Creek (see fishfinder magazine) for your first trip to Melville Island. Easier access and more options with the Vernon Islands giving you a nuimber of options for fiishing if the weather or strms come up.

Let us know how you get on

Cheers

ok guys thanks.
We're going during the week which sounds like is the go for fewer boats.
We have 4 boats going.
Will take that stuff on board. So basically most creeks between Camp Point and Robo Creek aren't worth it most of the time!
We will probably hit the Narrows on the way back Wednesday depending how we go Tues at Melville.
Will let ya's know how it goes.
Thanks guys

That's good info swoofa. Tiger just make sure McGlinn doesn't hit the bank at full noise with him on his back not spilling a drop with a treble in his knee. Ahhhhh memories. Mate if it's calm at night I would be fishing the reef n rocky dropp offs. Don't have to venture out to far from land. Use jig, drift, with gulps, squidgys. If you get a small red fish or stripey wack him out live. Good luck. Yellow n black.

We were over there last weekend on the full moon/spring tides. VERY quite on the barra front, despite large squadrons of mullet in the creeks.

We managed a few dozen between the 2 of us for 3 days fishing - and could stretch only 3 of those to over 55 !!!

I'm hear'n ya on the trip over Swoffa - I go over there regularly and reckon I bat 1 good to 4 shite trips ...

Been going there every neap for the past couple of months. All creeks are worth a look, if you can get into them. The first creek in the bay going west from camp point is shallow, the next one along is deeper. The one between Camp and Condar (3rd one down) has it's day. There is a creek behind Condar worth a look too. The mouths of the creeks are shallow and hard to navigate on all but the top of the tide so low tide lock-in or get in and get out over the high. The exposed creek mouths are bad news if the wind is blowing the swell onshore.

Usually manage 10-12 keeper barra each trip but nothing big. Reef fishing has been a bit hit and miss and you have to work to find them. The big Spainards seem to have disapeared in the last month but a few smaller spotties and grays around.

If you live in Darwin, don't bother going from Leaders. cr.p road that takes longer than if you depart from Buff Creek. Been more and more boats over there lately. More and more storms too. After getting caught in a storm on a trip over last year, I wont go if there's storms around anymore.
