Saltwater Challenge

Post by Matt Flynn- »

Darwin Flyrodders Inc were extremely pleased with the results of their
annual three-day NT Saltwater Fly Fishing Challenge held at
Bynoe Harbour.

Thirteen teams (two fly fishers per team) fished the event and with warming
weather and great tides.

All anglers were expecting good fishing for the event and this proved to be
the case with excellent fishing conditions and good numbers of fish being
caught.

The Saltwater Fly Fishing Challenge targets seven species - barramundi,
trevally, tarpon, salmon, queenfish, snapper and mackerel - for anglers to
gain maximum points. The maximum line class is 10 kg . Points are allocated
on fish length with bonus points awarded for the number of the seven
targeted species that each angler/team catches per day.

Although the weather was hot with some big late afternoon storms making
fishing a challenge, a total of more than 1300 fish were caught for the
three days.

The dominant species were trevally, queenfish and snapper while tarpon and
mackerel proved tough for anglers to find.

All fish were measured and released.

Over 60 local and interstate sponsors helped make the Saltwater Fly Fishing
Challeng' a success and they include Castlemaine Perkins, Lowrance,
Reddington, Loomis, Airflo, Rio, Cortland, E J Todd, JM Gillies, Mayfly
Tackle plus local tackle and other local businesses.

Team Fishing and Outdoor World made up of Matt West and Mark West won
Champion Team (6772 points).

Runner Up Champion Team was Pelagic Pirates (6584 points) comprising Dave
Bowering and Roxley Pearce.

In a highly commendable effort Dave Bowring defended his 2004 crown to once
again take out Champion Angler (5068 points). Close behind was Matt West who
took out Runner Up Champion Angler (4244 points).
