For a boat camera cant beat the waterproof version of Panasonic Lumix. Had it in the tinnie for about 6mths without any problems. Just rinse off in fresh water when cleaning the boat

Hey Nomad, mine is the Panasonic FT10, waterproof to 3m.14.1 megapix etc. Have taken photos snorkling over coral etc, wash off at the end of the day. Has a clear plastic cover which makes it ideal for not being super gentle with it. Great for the price. Obviously can go for the diver's type of camera but be prepared for the $ outlay.

pentax optio and a canon 550d slr. the pentax has been a great hunting and fishing camera over the years but now I much prefer to carry the 550d inside my ortlieb waterproof carry bag. having used the same ortlieb over the last 10+ years I can vouch for its durability and waterproofness and gives reassurance that your gear wont get waterdamage.
just need to get myself a good allround lens for the 550d now!

Nikon D90 with an 18-200 lens. This set-up takes good shots but I also like it because of its 10 x zoom. If I see something I want to have a closer look at I take a photo at max zoom with the lens and then use the camera's 10 x zoom to magnify the photo. Its amazing how little specks in the distance can be magnified so much that you can easily see what they are. Today's cameras are amazing.

got an email today from carbatec(woodwork and power tool supplies) and saw they had cheap hard cases on sale that look pretty good value for money.
anyone interested checkout www.carbatec.com.au and search for black box hard cases.

Re: What sort of Camera do you use?
Been doing a bit of research into DSLR's lately. Think I've made a decision but just after others opinions. Was initially looking at the Nikon D5100 or even the Nikon D7000. Since then I'm now leaning towards the Canon EOS 60D. Similar features to the D7000 for around $450 less. From what i've read I'm thinking about just buying the body and paying a bit extra for good lenses rather than the standard kit ones. What is your experience?

Re: What sort of Camera do you use?
Hi Moonman,
The debate of which camera is better between Canon and Nikon is to me pretty similar to which car is better, Ford or Holden?
The best would be for you to go in a shop and to play with the two camera that you are looking at.
How do they fit in your hand, how the menus are intuitive to you, not to the sales man, whose biggest profit margin is not alway the most expensive camera.
If you can even take two cards to the shop, and shot a few frames with each camera (Use a different card in each camera), then go home and play with the file on your computer and see which one you prefer.
You can ask a lot to a camera sale man, don't be shy about it, that is what they are paid for.
In the end choose the one that you enjoy the more in your hand, because you will be the one using it.
Often when people ask me what camera to buy, I tell them that if the red one, the blue, or yellow or red one is their favourite, to choose this one.
That another might be much better on the spec sheet, but if they don't like it they won't use it as much as the one they would have liked, and it then defeat the purpose of having a camera.
I don't know if that makes a lot of sense written like that, but hopefully you understand what I mean?
And also don't look at what the sale's man tell you that a camera can do, but think at what is it that you want to do with this camera.
There is no point in having a camera that can do super fast autofocus if you only photograph static object, or very high iso if you only work in very bright light.
Does it make any sense?
And yes the idea of not getting the kit lenses and to buy a better one is a very good one, in my own and personal opinion.
Have a good day,
Pecheur
P.S: The Nikon D7000 as surprised a lot of people by it very good image quality, and some pros use it as an emergency body.
(I have never tried it myself).
Also, I myself use both some Nikon and some Canon, depending of what I do, I am happy with both and am not affiliated to any camera brand in particular.

Re: What sort of Camera do you use?
Hello
Silly questions time.
Like most I have a whizz bang digital camera that's great (for me) for average pixs but absolutely hopeless on close-ups!!
When I want a up-close shot of some small or detailed object and get closer than a foot or so, the result is a photo, the blur of which I can recall from younger drinking days.
So what do I need to have to do close-ups and capture the detail?

Ron see if you have an auto focus facility?? This is why I bit the bullet and got the 'hybrid', go from vid to still and back, focus set automatically, foolproof. Just set everything on auto and point. got sick of 'jinnin' round.
