The rock and Cape Hotham.

Post by Mightypies »

Afternoon all, just a question on travelling to the rock and possibly Cape Hotham on Thursdays set of neaps. I haven't been before and will be by myself. Just a little worried about sinking my new rig on a reef. I've 30 yrs experience in boats/fishing , however only in the Harbor arms /rivers ect ect where I knew where I was going and without a Sounder with decent Nav set up. I'm running a 10 inch garmin echomap ultra 105sv but again I've only ever used them as fishfinders and not Navigational tools. If I lock in " the rock" for example by way point and follow that line will it keep me clear of any unseen reef. I just don't trust it and don't know if I should lol. Ps. Not sure of where I'm launching from as yet. More than likely buff creek. Cheers

No reef to hit on the way to The Rock in Shoal Bay but plenty of flats to get stuck on if you miss the tide.

Cape Hotham is reasonably safe, there are a couple of rock patches near the entrance to Saltwater Arm, and an extended rocky area next to the SWA boat ramp, but Cape Hotham itself, if you travel a few hundred metres away from the shoreline, is safe enough.

Going around the tip of Cape Hotham can be interesting when wind and tide are going against each other. On the far side of Hotham, near the base of the peninsula, are oyster rocks that dry at low tide.
