Ruins of settlement @ Escape Cliffs Cape Hotham NT

Post by Flickin4em » Fri Jul 17, 2020 9:24 pm

Chasing a bit of information or even a couple of photos of the ruins from the early settlement out at escape cliffs on Cape Hotham.

It seems that from past trips passing by the area the small gap near the south end is the best shortcut through the mangroves without having the other option of anchoring miles away at crab creek.
Anchored just offshore then getting through 20m of mangroves to a beach then scrambling a track to the top somewhere along that section seems the quickest way. Ha ha ha .... :banghead: but I am not sure on how soft this beach is or how difficult the climb would be? Is it worth it to save a kilometre or are we better off just going via the beach in the creek instead? Are the building remains similar to the ones at Coburg with the old chimneys still standing or just piles of rubble the bush has reclaimed ? I have found a limited amount of information online about it but a first hand account of what is actually left up there nowadays and how overgrown its accessibility is would be much better.

Any information would be greatly appreciated , thanks in advance.

I have been there. There is very little ruins there really. Nothing compared to the Victorian settlement at cobourg.
There is a few water Rusted steel riveted tanks, 1m2. There is the slab of the main hut in the pictures. It’s says it was 25m back from the cliffs but it’s 9 but it’s about 12 now.
Back in the day the cliffs were Visible from sea, but now covered over with mangroves.
We went from the creek. Wasn’t too far of a walk. We locked in the creek, we would have spent 2 hrs searching the ruins. Then proceeded to catch bugger all crabs or fish in the creek.
I think from memory it was around 4 m needed to get in and out. Seen a big arse croc there too.
Choppers land just on the other side of the creek and have a flick, so maybe there’s fish there sometimes.

The creek has a hole just inside on the bend that had a groper in it once when I was there, or at least that's what it looked like on the sounder. Has to be a spot to drop a livie.

Caught more barra though in the mangrove roots around the entrance of the marsh near where the water runs out over the sand. Interesting place to explore.

Never did go to the 'ruins'. Must have been a helluva place to be back in the day - no pub, no Maccas, no tackle shop ...

Ended up just anchoring a bit offshore inside the mangroves on the top of an almost 6m tide. It turns out I had fluked it and was right in front of the ruins, leaving them only around 50m away right on top of the cliffs. As was mentioned by mickkk there wasn't much left of it just a few old riveted boilers and a few other rusty items from quite some time ago.

Nice spot for a visit but the areas lack of freshwater nearby except for the marsh in the wet season would've been a big issue for those living there.

Cheers for the follow up, I've often wondered what was left up there

Turns out they had a well or 2 up there and despite a few complaints by their doctor the water was fine when they shipped it to Adelaide for testing. I didn't stay long enough to have a proper look around this trip but might go back again for a better look around. Will be hunting this book down for a decent read shortly too.

Fella lives in Nightcliff. I got a few books from him. Well worth the read.
