Yalata trip

Post by Daz12 »

For something completely different, recently did a trip back to the Motherland (SA) to fish for Mulloway on the beaches of the Far West Coast.

Organised a permit through Yalata Anangu Aboriginal Corporation last year to make sure I got a spot.

Pretty popular nowadays not like when we first started going there many years ago. First trip I did was in my mates HQ Holden with a couples of cheap rod holders screwed to the roof gutters, a Kmart tent, 44 litre Igloo esky that held ice for about 8 hours and not much else. Was even before the internet and we just had a map to guide us in the right direction. Took us a few trips but eventually snared a couple of Mulloway, a 48lb and 45lb caught on the same day. On one of the trips we even saw a Southern Right Whale and her calf about 150m off the beach where we were fishing. They hung around for a couple of days and it was pretty cool.
This time had all the gear, Engels, trailer with a quad on board, rood top tent, Lithium batteries, solar panels. Much more comfortable and could cover more ground with the quad.

We found a couple of good looking beaches with deep gutters and holes that we fished for 6 days.

My younger brother who lives in Whyalla caught us a heap of squid to take and it was very handy having an extra Engel to use as a freezer. Fresh bait on hand made things easier but we still caught salmon Trout and Mullet to mix it up.

Unfortunately the weather was not ideal with strong Sou' Easterlies, cold weather and a bit of rain.

Fair bit of weed in the surf didn't make it easy either.

Still we fished pretty hard and had two rods out each for around 10 hours a day. No luck on the Mulloway but caught Salmon, Mullet, Flathead, Sweep, an Eagle Ray and a couple of sharks.

It was a long drive and a lot of effort but worth it as I love fishing the beaches over there.....

That's a good looking bit of beach, sad that it didn't produce a big mullie for you.

Great report, really enjoyed those pix.

No mulloway here in Taz, some great beaches though, but with 90% salmon in the surf.

And I see 'things go better with Coke' :D

Thanks Matt. Yep great beaches but I think the cr.p weather played a part.
Noticed I'd lost a bearing cap when I stopped to let down my tyres. Bit of bush mechanics to stop the dust turning into a grinding paste.
Heading back down to spend a couple of weeks at Coffin Bay over xmas so hope to get into the Salmon at Almonta and Gunyah beaches. If the weather's ok might head out a charter to chase the big Samson Fish they get down there as well.
