Any idea how many actual (person) entrants Ronje?

Average of 60cm and 3kg for the Barra isn't too bad if they were all recorded.

About 50 people all up I think. Some of the "teams" only had 1 person.
They did it hard.

Friday was blowing 20 knts straight up the river (with nowhere to hide out of it) and they got 45 barra.

Sat was 25 knots (morning at least) so got 13.

I went down to Thompson's Point boatramp (15 km from mouth) today by road and saw a guy get 2 @ about 70cm off the ramp there. Wind has dropped a bit since weekend.

Disappointing to once again see so many large fish dead floating around the river, mostly sharked.
Is it that hard to move your boat a few hundred meters away to give the fish a chance after release, or is it all about chest thumping and trying to prove you're manhood.
Disgusting to keep seeing images like this on social media.

So.... 6 barra of 1m +.

98 threadies with 20 of 1m+. 1380mm biggest.

506 barra when prediction was 420. Prediction from Bill Sawynok's Crystal bowl had a +- 10% component so still higher than prediction error factor.

Interesting stat is the average fish size was 65cm. That av figure has been steadily increasing.

Closed barra season coming up in 2 weeks or so.

I guess that now anglers chasing threadies, fingermark etc will be cursed by unwanted and unintentional bycatch of barramundi.

Fella called Greg Rogers cracked it this 1.5 metre king threadfin at Port Alma this morning.

I spoke to Greg about the mat being crinkled at the 0 to 10cm mark. He said that because his brag mat only went to 1200mm and he wanted to be absolutely sure of length, he put texta marks for length head to tail on the boat gunwale and measured that distance at 1500mm when he got home.

Do me for a genuine 1.5m king threadie.

That might be true for some areas, Dan.

But here we only eat the manly type of big cavendish bananas not those feminine little things called Lady Fingers in more northern areas of Qld and NSW.

What's happening here.

Well, the east coast barramundi closure on 1 Nov has sure knocked interest in barramundi fishing here although unintentional captures are happening all the time. One might say that the threadfin fishing is great but those pesky barramundi keep getting in the way.

The season opens up again on 1 Feb.

Visiting fisher numbers have dropped off to recover in Feb.

King threadfin abound still with no seasonal closure and is an area where development of the fishery can be explored particularly with fly fishing enthusiasts.

There's a lot of work under way to exempt the freshwater section of the Fitzroy at Rockhampton from the annual closure, the Qld govt is warm to the idea and approval is pending. Not under a stocked impoundment permit arrangement so no fees involved. Simply local regional management of a community resource.

That'll take some of the lumps and bumps of a 3 month barramundi closure out of the equation.

That freshwater section will need to be stocked and progress with that in mind is well advanced. Council now has a aquaculture division and its been visiting s/e asia looking for how its done there and maybe attract some interest here. Investigations into a local hatchery taking place in conjunction with Gladstone Water Board hatchery staff (Gladstone Area Water Board - GAWB has a hatchery for stocking Awoonga dam and supplies excess fingerlings to other places with same strain).

Then BOTH versions of barramundi fishing can be available at the 1 fishing destination. Good for related businesses (accommodation, guides, tackle stores etc).

That's the latest overview.
