tranx 300HG Vs Callcutta 300D

Post by Jtc79 »

Hi ALL,

Thinking off buying one of the Tranx 300HG for big barra/ jigging. I have seen plenty of data on how good they are , but not sure on wether they will last.
I also going to use either reel for black bass next year.
Anyone out there have a Tranx and can give some info that would be great.

The calcutta 300D has been around for years now and is a warrior and trusted reel but less drag so thought about just beefing up the drag with carbon washers.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers .

catch ya all on the flip side.

I had a Calcutta 400B and the drag was cr.p from day 1. I put up with it for a while then got the upgrade to carbon and a full service by Northshore (Deepblack) made a massive difference ,just couldn't believe it was the same reel .

Buy the Tranx but unless you are adamant about "high speed" jigging with it I would get the 300A. Double handle so better balanced, more drag, better retrieve rate for Barra and still excellent for "Slow jigging" ie. Gulps and flutter jigs.

As a side note, across the board without exception the lower gear ratio in a reel model is always going to be stronger and longer wearing, the only reason to go higher gearing is if you need the higher retrieve rate for a specific purpose.

I have a tranx 300. Trolled up a metery and I think the barra was pretty outgunned. Great for lobbing big lures, fast retrieves once the lure is out of the strike zone or if it is drifting to runoff snags. It is big but I can cast it comfortably. I have it paired with a 20-40kg 7ft3 rod (2 piece)

Ooohh, following this one. I'm tossing up whether I stay with my Abu Revo, or go to one of the new Tranx. I went to the Tackle Shop that I like buying stuff from the other day and was set on looking at the 400, but the response I got the from the bloke behind the counter had me walking out straight away without looking back, let's say I'll never go back there again.
Be interested in which way you end up going.
Cheers
