NT Govt Media Release: Manton Dam Closed
The Parks and Wildlife Commission of the NT (PWCNT) advises that Manton Dam Recreation Area has been closed for swimming following a recent sighting of a suspected estuarine (saltwater) crocodile.
Acting Senior Ranger, Sam McKenzie said the popular recreation area would stay closed until the PWCNT Crocodile Management Team had undertaken comprehensive crocodile surveys of the area.
“Public safety is our number one priority and the area will be closed to the public for water-based activities including swimming, water-skiing, jetskiing or wakeboarding whilst spotlight surveys are undertaken by the Crocodile Management Unit,” Mr McKenzie said.
“Surveys commenced last night and will run for five consecutive nights after which time the PWCNT will make a decision whether to re-open the area to the public.
“As the weather begins to warm up, crocodiles become more active and would like to remind the public to BE CROCWISE in and around Top End waters at all times.
“Members of the public are urged to report any suspected estuarine crocodile sightings to the Crocodile Management Unit on 0419 822 859.”
BE CROCWISE and remember that croc danger is real, so don’t risk your life. For more information visit http://www.nt.gov.au/becrocwise.

Manton Dam Re-open
The Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife Commission of the NT advises that Manton Dam Recreation Area is now open to the public.
Manton Dam was closed to all recreation activities on Wednesday following reports of a possible estuarine (saltwater) crocodile sighting.
Acting Senior Ranger, Sam McKenzie said the Crocodile Management Team had undertaken five consecutive nights of spotlighting surveys in an effort to locate the reported estuarine (saltwater) crocodile.
“Rangers have completed five consecutive nights of survey without any sightings of the reported estuarine crocodile; as a result we have decided to reopen the area for water based activities,” Mr McKenzie said.
“The popular recreation area is now open for all water-based activities including swimming, water-skiing, jet-skiing and wakeboarding.
“While Manton Dam Recreation Area is open to the public again, people are advised to use caution as estuarine crocodiles can be found in any freshwater system or billabong in the Top End.
“There are signs at Manton Dam Recreation Area providing information on how estuarine crocodiles are managed in the area and the Crocodile Management Team has installed an extra crocodile trap.
“We urge the public to BE CROCWISE at all times when in or near Top End waters, and remember that croc danger is real, so don’t risk your life.”
To report estuarine (saltwater) crocodile sightings in the Darwin region, phone 0419 822 859, or in the Katherine region, phone 0407 958 405.
Manton Dam, located 70km south of Darwin, is popular for a range water based activities including water skiing, wakeboarding, fishing and swimming.
