NT GOVT PRESS RELEASE: 4.25m Crocodile Removed from Fogg Dam Trap

Parks and Wildlife Commission NT rangers have removed a 4.25m estuarine (saltwater) male crocodile from a trap at Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve.

Senior wildlife officer Tom Nichols said the 4.25m saltie is the first to be removed this year from Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, 70km east of Darwin, which is part of the Adelaide River catchment.

“Public safety is our top priority and that’s why we have a permanent trap set at Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve,” Mr Nichols said.

“We removed seven salties from Fogg Dam last year and 12 the year before.

“Recent heavy rain across the Top End has made it easier for crocs to move around and this latest catch is another important reminder to Territorians to BE CROCWISE.

“This means being extremely cautious around all Top End waterways and to heed safety signs.”

Mr Nichols said a record 315 saltwater crocodiles were removed from Top End waterways last year and so far this year, 57 saltwater crocodiles had been removed.

Estuarine crocodiles are common in the Top End and can inhabit any waterways including freshwater systems, billabongs and low areas subject to flooding.

The Parks and Wildlife Commission NT urges the public to BE CROCWISE and remember that croc danger is real so don’t risk your life. For more information go to http://www.nt.gov.au/becrocwise

To report estuarine (saltwater) crocodile sightings in the Darwin region phone 0419 822 859 or in the Katherine region phone 0407 958 405.
