Re: Is the Tiwi closure good for the NT, or bad?
Please correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this restriction on the Tiwi's and most other land claim areas a bit like apartheid. Where one race is handed out a lot more benefits, can go anywhere without restriction etc.
if there is a definite case of a tribal area or sacred ground then that should be recognised as such. But when the restriction is the whole northern half of the Tiwi's or includes 2km out to see, or 10000ft over Uluru. Please give me a break.
I am not racist and I firmly believe in equal rights for ALL Australians.
Probably said to much already...

How the f-ck can it be good?
The CLP f-cked up the bargaining with the Tiwi Land Council and told them they weren't getting any money for permits. Then they banned fishing.
The permit system cost next to nothing to run and was a happy compromise.
What a monumental f-up

Has anyone noticed just how silent the CL has been on this?
even the minister cant give a clear answer re the legality of the ban - and no one has pushed the subject.
Surely we arent just going to believe what they have told us without question

It's just another reason why I am starting to consider an alternate state to call home in the future. With the power and water hikes coming which will drive up the already inflated cost of living up here too. I have only been back in the NT for a week after living in Melbourne for the last year and I can not believe how much things have changed as far as legislation, costs of every thing and the like.

absolutely sucks
lodges have it sewn up so they can guarantee no other boats will invade "thier exclusive waters", nothing more than a handful of recreational boats anyway were ever going there as BMB decision stopped charter boats way back
I was over port hurd september & it was brilliant, having no fishing pressure & closure of fish farm back in 2007 the place recovered really well.
I used to run various charter boats over there at different times between 97-2001-2 & noticed it going downhill
was there all of 5 minutes for a 91cm & couldn't hang on to a half dozen more & stacks of jacks, goldies, threadys, etc
was quite happy to pay for the permit system & not worry about a refund, even if it was $200 was worth it

the closure is not good but on a separate note or vote I wouldn't mind a few folks considering and moving to an alternative state
also happy to pay for a permit with no refund ($200)

Yeh we are certainly a country that is all about ripping off the populace no matter what state you live in, It starts at federal and then the states and local councils add their extra bit on top. It's no wonder we are now in the top 5 most expensive countries in the world to live in.
Its all about corporation greed in this country now, it used to be about the working class but that all changed when we became a society that is so greedy for money that we have forgotten what it was that made this country so great on the first place.

Might be able to go back to a few spots, and have a good fish with less competition again!!
I think it will be quite a while before the Tiwi's is sorted anyway, still had a good trip there a couple weeks ago.
If there is water and it holds fish, then it is fun trying to fool them into eating what you offer!!
Especially when you can see them!

I have worked and lived predominantly in and with Indigenous communities for over 15 years....i have as many blackfella friends as white...most very traditional.....l am about as far from racist as a white fella can get...but find myself agreeing with cuddles.
When will my children's heritage (since 1833) give them the same rights to their birthplace? My identity is also insepereable from this country and i respect the land in a spiritual way.
I am not angry or citing rebellion....just beginning to feel cornered. The current approach is decisive and builds resentment.....and nurtures racism.
