SWA crab sesh

Post by Matt Flynn »

Hit SWA with my old mate and croweater Paul Dornbusch, who used to run GPS Surveys in Darwin and helped set up the first FISH FINDER boat with differential GPS years ago.

We got quite few crabs crabs on the push in and I reckon we would have bagged out if we were an hour earlier. Crabs disappeared at about 3/4 incoming tide.

Lots of busted-arse crabs out there, I reckon Shane Doevy was there before us and we got his leftovers

Gave my Doevy crab pliers to the All4Adventure crew so I couldn't use 'em, they would have been handy, we got two rambos ...

Pic is of the best buck for the day. Biggest crab was a jenny which wedged in a hole behind my livie tank (the tank is only there to look good, haha) and refused to come out.

Road was corrugated on the way in, grader was there on the way out

Nice work, and nice dark stella buck! Good to hear the grader is out there as im going tomorrow morning :)

Interesting re the busted crabs. In the SWA topic I posted below, we encountered 3 broken clawed crabs and a run of 4 bucks in a row with only 1 claw early on. Ended up throwing the 1 clawed bucks back as we did well.

Some good crabs there Matt> 8)

Perhaps all the Rambos that are about at the moment are giving the other crabs a touch up.

Forgot to mention there were a couple of barra boofing at the boat ramp when we got back. But they didn't like my lures.

No fish on the sounder during the day, I reckon most of the barra are up the top of the river.

Rough trip on the road this morning but the graders had fixed it for the drive back. Cleaned up on the crabs including 2 rambos, and plenty of busted crabs thrown back. Plenty of crocs too!

Matt, did you lose a pot up there? I found 1 in the middle of the channel with 2 floats and M Flynn etc written on it. PM me if you like.

Gday Alby - yes, I lost a pot with two floats. A small well-trained croc in the area pulled the floats under and they did not reappear. The pot is yours, thanks for telling me though, it is good to know it was retrieved. Was it full of crabs? Or covered in bite marks?

No crabs but a little bit of fish bait was left in it. I baited the pot up and used it for 2 pulls. First resulted in a stella buck mounting a tiny lil, but agro, jenny. :naughty: The next pull resulted in an average buck.

I always have problems with crocs out there! I had 1 dragged out into the main channel today, and my first 2 pots had the bait taken. It pays to take lots of bait out there!

I was at Leaders Creek just over a week ago and with 4 bucks I only got 4 claws. The biggest crab had no claws. Must be fighting season
