Took a mate out to Tommy cut a few weeks ago and as the tide started to come in the barra started Boofing so I tied on a popper and advised my mate (who is new to this caper) to do the same-.he had never used a popper . It took a bit to convince him that a plain black popper that looked like nothing would work. After about 30 mins I had caught half a doz bazzs and he had caught none but had missed a few, I saw what he was doing wrong- not leaving slack after every pop. He then started to retrieve it correctly , pop, pause ,pop, pause BOOF! 98cm of chrome barra hooked in the throat, his second legal barra and first legal barra on a lure. If you pause and leave a belly in your line the hook -up rate is as good as any other hard body. This works on HBs as well jig ,jig, jig, pause with abit of slack Boof -lure inhaled, Best to use nuetral lures with this technique as the lure wont just float out of the zone on the slack line pause.
Skipping through the replies on this subject, most of you are still using poppers and fizzers but has anyone tried using Sqidgy Boof Frogs or Zoom's Horny Toads in a soft bait? Many anglers have much success using them in our Barra impoundments in Qld.
Don't be shy to use them in saltwater estuaries neither along with your freshwater billabongs. Just a cheap and varied option to top surface fishing. They send off small vibrations with their loose leg action on retrieval which you can vary leaving a nice bubble trail.
Dave: I've got heaps of Horny Toads. Used em with success in billabongs early morning surface for Toga and Baz.
Used em in the salt fished right up in the sticks on a falling tide nailing Baz, Tarpon and even a nice goldie while flats casting.
Great lures, but the legs can get torn up a bit after some strikes. Cheers,
