Corroboree surface fishing with frogs

Post by tristan.sloan »

Hi guys,

Had a pretty exciting session out at Corroboree a few days ago, I was fishing the river 2 sea bully frogs on the surface on the early morning

In total between my brothers and I we had over 100 surface strikes from toga, barra and tarpon by casting these frogs right back up into the lillies and hopping and swimming them back through the patches of water....real heart in your mouth stuff with drag screwed right up to pull these fish out

unfortunately we only landed 2 barra and 4 toga plus a couple of tarpon....these lures obviously get the fish fired up but I am struggling with how to modify these lures to achieve a better hookup ratio, any suggestions guys?

....was thinking of rigging them with some trailing assist hooks, maybe circles?......the hard part is still keeping them weedless while improving hook ups

Maybe a few small stinger hook like what's on Octa jigs. Will pick a little weed, but if they are in the skirt of the fron may be ok, just need a juggle off each cast

Rig a trailing hook with a heavy (60lb) mono loop from the eye back across the hook gape so it sits outside the hook about level with the barb area........pretty much how you rig a weedless fly.

Not perfect but 75% better.

Cut the legs off the frogs, they only attack short strikes........if you want to put on a stinger make it weedless by whipping either a wire or mono weed guard on....works a treat with minimal weed.......

First thing I do is cut those legs off and have no probs with hooking up.

Surface lures make for the most exciting barra fishing, well done. I used to use z-man frogs, reasonable hookup rate

There used to be a guide in QLD called Jason Wilhelm. I've seen a show or a video clip where he fished surface frogs at Awoonga Dam. In the clip he moves the frogs quickly across the surface like about 1m per second and you could see the bow waves behind the frogs from massive barra. I think he said because of the speed it creates a very aggressive bite. Obviously that would be hard in thick lillies but might be a go to try running them out on front of them in low light.

Anyway, get on FB and ask him

Ill second the zman frogs, not the pop frogs though, the other ones. Giving a slight pause after the fish strikes before you strike will help too.

Here's an Owner single on the back end of a Spook, it has a nylon weed guard attached between the cords with super glue. This can be dragged through the thickest of vegetation with out snagging. The nylon is very easily displaced by a striking fish. Maybe put something like this on the arse end on your frogs.......

Just had a look and asked about shipping to aus. If they can do it for a decent price I'll grab a few sets and if anyone else wants some I can place a bulk order. Did you see the bass camelback type lures. Pearl shad would send the barra nuts I reckon be getting a few to try
