Shady Camp Barrage

Post by Jprbeard »

Hey guys,

Im planning to go to Shady Camp this weekend, not sure whether saturday or sunday. I was wondering if anyone else was planning to head there? or if anyone wanted to come along with me? (i could use the company and to pick your brain for Barra tips)

What are the roads like leading to shady camp?

I wanna spend the majority of the day there to maximise my chance of my first ever barra. Not too keen to stay past sunset as I'm very wary of crocs. But i guess it depends on the fishing also.

Thanks
James

Are you landbased or in a boat? Tides are ordinary for launching and retrieving unless you get there around 3am

can fish landbased the fresh side no worries.
just flick off the ramp and the barrage itself.

as cuddles has said there are plenty of small rat barra in there this year.
you should be able to snag a handfull just doing this.

small poppers or rubbers.

To maximise your chances fish the salt water side on the first push of the incoming tide. If that coincides with first light or dusk...even better. You must be there at low and get that first push.

At the low fish between the rocks in the wash from the barrage. As the tide comes in bring your lure into and fish the hollow just below the barrage and fish it right to your feet.

Dont just randomly throw your lure all over the place. Once the rocks in the river main are under water concentrate on fishing the edge of the current line from the main wash....or even in the wash itself. Pull your lure alongside and parallel to the edge of the current line.

Don't fish the bottom unless you are weedless.

If you are fairly new to barramundi get a packet of small 3-4cm white squidgies. Fish them about the middle of the water column. No need to work them.

To recap. That first push of the tide, salt water side, in the wash, with a white squidgy, with a reasonable braid (7k+) and a reasonable leader (40-50ib fluorocarbon). Do you want to catch a barra? Because that's how you catch a barra. I guarantee it.

Stay alert for crocs but no need to be hysterical about them. If you are there after dark there is a need to be hysterical about them.
Its not a crisis unless there is blood around.
If there is blood around......well its a police matter...
