Corroboree for beginners

Post by Reddog6714 »

An old mate of mine from Karratha and i are going to Corroboree for a few days on the full moon, we are going to be renting one of the house boats and though i have fished the Pilbara from the Montebello's to the DeGray river and the Kimberley's From Kuri Bay to Vansittart i am looking forward to some sweet water fun and would appreciate any local knowledge. for example how do i get a feed of Cherabin or Redclaw? and are there any large Barra around at this time of year? what are the best lures to use etc, could be an annual trip if it works out well thanks in advance for any info Reddog

Trollling at night is your best chance at hooking a good fish or around dawn and dusk before the traffic gets on the water. Corrobborre hasn't fished that well for a couple of years so I wouldn't plan on killing the pig but this year it doe's seem to be holding a school of bigger size fish than average for the billabong and you never know, you may win the barra lottery. Most people use little lucifers from reidys lures during day light hours. I run a big ass black and silver B52 at night. as for red claw and Cherabin I haven't heard of any body really chasing them with much success but I guess you never know. I personally have never tried.

Are you allowed to use traps? I thought they were not allowed in the Mary River system.

I was reading the sign the other day and it had the fresh water rules and regs their regarding pot limits ect. From that I think it said you are allowed. I believe you aren't allowed them at shady camp barrage or in National parks. Corroborre is on station land from my understanding of it so the law probably doesn't apply their. the rest of the mary system or any where with access at least, you have to go through National park or reserve land. I could be wrong but this is my understanding of the situation.

And I may have been wrong in my comment that I have never tried potting it. Back when I was a kid I now remember doing it once. We got fark all so never bothered again. At the time we didn't know any thing about the laws as we hadn't been there before. We tried in the Mary river bridge billabong and never got much as well. I know red claw and cherabin are in there but not in any aggregation numbers that are worth targeting them.

Thanks for the info
i have invested in a few Scum frogs before the trip as i hear the Saratoga love them
does any one have any commendations for fishing tackle shops in the Darwin area??

i have not had a fish for two years so i will be happy just to get away and wet a line get some fresh air and take in some great scenery but it could turn into an annual thing.

so if i was to go looking for Cherabin or Red Claw where would i go in the Greater Darwin Area not looking to kill the pig just a feed.

You would probably be best to go and see Kai at Goat Island on the Adelaide river.
