Re: Darwin's latest power price rises are ...
I dont know if anyone noticed but the power price jumped up last quarter as well, they didn't advertise it but it happened. Our usage dropped about 15% but the bill was up 5%. Thats a 20% rise already, so really with the announced rise is more like 50% increase. I think by standards though we're doing pretty well, our bill has only just gone over $400 a quarter, that running a 3 brm plus pool and office. We have flouros throughout which i think makes a difference.
I guess the end of the day prices go up, we all complain but we deal with it because we still live in the best part of Australia and we still have the best way of life. It's just a shame that we have to pay for incompetence and deception of cr.p governance. I don't agree with the price hike but for the people that bag Millsy about this, just remember that PAWA didn't get that far in debt in 8 weeks.

What's irritating me is that on top of high prices is planned outages. I got a notice telling me that for 4 full working days in the next 2 weeks my power "may be interrupted". I know from previous planned outages here that its usually off for the full period. Not once has there been a planned outage in any other place that I've lived in interstate or in Darwin, but this will make it at least 6 planned outages in the last few months, in addition to unplanned ones.
Now I can't work without power, so I guess I'll just have to take the boat out and fish for a feed.

NT businesses have to add on these extra costs, it means wage pressure too, so local prices go up, and then you see more online posts saying "the locals are ripping me off, so I'm buying online".

I don’t think they trying to over compensate to make up for the debt, they are simply making us pay the full price for the service. I have nothing to back that up, but that’s the way I read it.
I heard we still have lower then the national average? Not sure how true that is!
But the buck stops at Heno for being a weak pr..k, PWC didn’t just come out and say sh!t were broke Heno knew all about it but was to scared to act.

If I remember correctly, when Henderson came in there was recognition that the whole system was in need of a massive over-haul as there had been minimal upkeep during the 21 years of CLP Governance. At the time there were sub-stations exploding & hire of generators to get the northern suburbs out of the dark. During Henderson's tenure there have been incremental increases in the cost of both power & water each year, supposedly used to update and maintain a dilapidated system. These increases were in the order of 30% over three years, if memory serves me correctly. Don't think this debt is something 'new'. Be nice to see the books (for those that can make sense of this situation) and get some transparency on where this debt has been accumulated.

Our bill was $180 last time, not too concerned. Remember all those blackouts a few years back? That was what needed money to fix. I'm happy to pay more if it means fewer extended blackouts.

I'm pretty sure the parliament office were Millsy sits doesn't use power and water, last years paper had something about some deal done with a mob that only covers businesses and the households couldn't use.

WTF beer prices up by 57.7% in 10 years.
Also it's hard to account the correct figures for utilities when you weren’t paying the full price in 2002.

We in the big smoke "Darwinge" are paying the same price for power as those out in remote communities even though the cost of generation out there is way higher, if we stopped subsidising the non-productive remote communities we would be much better off.
And to back Nomad up, most people don't realise switches have two positions.

Re: Darwin's latest power price rises are ...
I’m actually fine with the increases. You can’t cut corners on this kind of infrastructure. You need to pay if you want it to work. Upgrading the Power network and moving power underground in the Northern Suburbs costs tens of millions as did the huge project to divert all sewerage from the city to br treated (rather than pumping it out into the harbour). The government borrowed all of the money to pay for these projects and now we are trying to pay it back. Unfortunately people want a gas power station (not cheaper coal) and stable reliable power and raw sewerage to not be pumped into the harbour but they also don’t want to pay for it. If we don’t pay for it and keep borrowing money then we will end up stuffed like Greece. The NT government pays $750,000 per DAY in interest on the money we borrowed. That’s dead money, we need to balance our budget.

All of us understand that these price increases are needed after ten years of negligence by the Labor party. That is however not the issue. It's Millsy's stubborn adherence that the entrire range of price increases will come in on January 1, 2013. There not too many people that can afford an increase of approximately $150-200 or more per quarter overnight. My prediction is (and I dont think I really need a crystal ball for this one) that Millsy will be a one term wonder IF he insists on this stubborn autocratic decision. After all once half the population move away from the NT, the remainder will have to shoulder an even more disproportionate debt so up go more taxes. Perhaps Millsy is the best thing Labor has going for it here at the next election, I guess just like Fed Labor has incompetent Abbott.
The upside is the boat ramps might be a bit emptier, the fishing may improve for those affluent enough to be afford to live here..

Re: Darwin's latest power price rises are ...
Bit of info on electricity tariffs effective July 2012
Qld basic domestic tariff - 25.5c/kw hr (includes GST)
NT basic domestic rate - 23.95 c/kw hr (includes GST).
Both will rise in 2013. Not much difference between the 2.
More remote customers in NT??
No. Not by a long shot. Qld and WA have largest electricity networks in remote areas.
Water supply in Qld is run by commercial arms of councils and NOT state govt.
One identified electricity problem in Qld north of Brisbane is the design of new housing.
Builders happy to put in houses on slabs, poorly ventilated and no shade. I counted 5 airconditioners on a new slab house offered for sale recently. Quite common to see 4-6 a/cons in houses these days.
Demand for domestic electricity has gone viral in last 10 years.
Our previous illustrious leader Peter Beatie looted the "hollow logs" that all of the separate Regional Electricity Boards had built up over years to pay for maintenance of distribution eqpt/line infrastructure to maintain Govt spending in other areas. Then privatised electricty boards who had to start over again grappling with maintenance costs.
Luckily I have house built for hot weather (6 metre ceilings) and 4 metres off the ground to allow circulation underneath.
Electricity costs for heating/cooling are minimal. 5 ceiling fans.
