A better poll would be do you think Australia should supply Australia only with it's fish stocks
The past is history, the future is mystery, the moment is a gift and that's why it's called the present

I too fish to put meat on the table.
If you take speed/alcohol limits, we have them and the Gov't has various ways to enforce them. Camera's, traffic control, booze busses, rego inspections every 2 years or more, etc.
If we had a simple solution of policing the boat ramps, ie every boat is checked for their current limit, there would be no need to change the limits.
Every one would obey what we currently have.
If these proposed rules are inforced, will the Gov't give me money to buy back my boat, trailer, as it won't be economical to fish any more.
Is there a GREEN thing in amongst all this?
Interesting scamper it might be cheaper than all the current proposals

Been a couple of good suggestions.....rigorous policing of existing laws....minimum hook size limits.....I like them.
Its not a crisis unless there is blood around.
If there is blood around......well its a police matter...

Another solution is a "fish tax". Yes a "fish tax".
They are trying to get a mining tax through?
This is how it works,
Locals of the NT don't pay any tax up to our bag limit, any fish caught over this gets taxed.
All others, overseas and interstate have to pay a tax for each fish caught.
It's our resource and we should protect it for ourselves. If anyone else wants a piece of it, they have to pay.
As it is now, all the others just turn up and get our fish stocks for nothing.
Their not helping fix the roads, boat ramps, just plundering our resources.
The money raised goes to FFF members for our anual CHRISTMAS PARTY, should be a big one this year.
You all thought I was serious didn't you, but then again it could work.

Three Godies is not much considering they are usually a lot smaller than a Jewie or a Mackerel, if the bag limits get too restrictive people just won't bother going fishing, would be better to allow 5 Goldies per person but close off some areas to protect remaining stock.

Re: proposed bag limit changes
Who will police these regs? 12 years i have been up here and never seen the police or fisheries on the water or at the ramps. I work on bathurst island at the moment and 90 % of the white people that work here didnt even know goldies had a limit. Its hard not to catch em even when your not trying for them. We bagged out on some decent golds in half hour yesterday.
I believe the only way will be to close areas off and if you catch fish out of that area you need a photo with gps co ords or a land mark. Lower possesions will only cause death by upgrading.
lust my 2 cents

And we're worried about amateurs taking couple dozen reef fish per trip !!
Pros are killing it !!
trap boats fish where 99 % of anglers cant reach.+ they hardly catch any goldies or Jews.
Spot on there seano

Fish traps that are lost keep catching and killing fish as living fish go after the smell of those that are dead inside!

these new proposed changes are cr.p! there is nothing wrong with the perfectly sustainable limits we have in place now!

Re: proposed bag limit changes
i have had a eureka moment on this
it is obvious the issue with goldies and jewies is not with overfishing, but an environmental problem, perhaps disease on the shallow reefs, perhaps dredging, or perhaps finally the effects of years of two-stroke oil being poured into the sea
i arrive at this conclusion after discussions with the various sectors involved, and reading comments on here
keep in mind that people in the fishing game are generally solid tradie types, men who shake your hand with a firm grip, look you in the eye, and are forthright
they are not the slippery office-politician-legal-real estate salesman types who have so much to say
fishermen might twist the truth a little to deflect from a fishing spot, or exaggerate a catch, but these people are generally salt of the earth
on an important issue like this, they speak truthfully, with conviction, and without mincing words
from what these good people have told me, with regards to the demise of Darwin goldie and jewie stocks, I can say this
the small boat FTOs didn't do it
the big boat FTOs didn't do it
the professional fishos didn't do it
the amateur fishos didn't do it
i have also talked to people in side industries, and though these folk are a little more slippery than the average fisho (in some cases anyway) I can say, after frank discussions with them, that
the tackle shops didn't do it
the fishing electronics companies didn't do it
the outboard and boat companies didn't do it
the lure companies didn't do it
the book and dvd companies didn't do it
so clearly, we are looking at a natural cycle or a disease causing fish stocks to fall
for now, i await word from my good fishing contacts for news when the drought breaks at charles point, so to speak, and the snapper and jewies are back on the bite
please don't consider this post an excuse to not use good fishing practise, we must avoid causing barotrauma
happily, if it all falls in a heap, little fish are sweet

.......Im 95% sure the US government did it. That is what Kim Jong Il reckons anyway....
And if its not them.....we probably need to look seriously at the gay community who are responsible for everything that goes wrong thanks to their world pooferising agenda....
