Not sure about the VK licence Shaggs, something you might have to chase up through AMSA

No Shaggs.

Its not. Pilots run into the same problem

You wont have any trouble with the marine one though.

It’s far better to have a radio on board than not.
I think you would be hard pressed to get fined for using a VHF radio without a licence
Get the radio and get licenced later.

I fitted my vhf radio earlier this year and to be honest was quite unsure how to use it as it was completely new to me. I know a lot of you will roll your eyes upwards and say to yourselves "how easy it is to use a vhf radio" but if you have never used one before there is always a bit of "what is the correct way to use this thing".

I read the booklet that it came with but it discussed a lot of features that I don't use. I ended up putting a sticker in the boat of the correct procedure and way to talk on it when using the radio in an emergency. I guess it is easy, make sure you are on Channel 16 press to talk and hope like hell that someone can hear you.

A course sounds good but not at $300!!

Most important thing to remember is to observe radio silence periods. These occur for 3 minutes every half an hour. These silence periods allow weak transmissions to be heard, potentially life saving.

The most important thing is to make sure you leave it turned on. so many people only turn them on when THEY want to use it. :banghead:

technically you are supposed to be licenced to use them but its more important to use it than not for fear of getting a licence

knock on the door.

I just contacted them so you can both expect a knock soon

Blw. You need one for the VHF and HF but not the UHF or old CB 27mhz.
