maxpower wrote:Gday Buzzdog, I installed a redarc BCDC 1225 in my boat back in Feb. Its been very good so far. On a lot of my trips with extended motoring to and from, I return with my Minnkota battery at 100% even with pretty solid use in the fishing time. Ive been meaning to do up a bit of a post about the setup and I will soon. I set mine up with a changeover relay and can also charge my boat with a solar panel after trips and and during extended trips.

The BCDC itself is a sealed unit and I spray it down with freshwater after use and its fine. I think a BCDC1220 would be better in some ways for me because the alternator I have only puts out a max of 25amps. The redarc is always trying to draw the maximum amps for the minnkota battery so my start battery is missing out when its on the "boost" cycle, this causes it to switch off every few minutes to give the start battery a charge. Im guessing with the 1220 there should be spare 5amps available when cruising to top up the start battery reducing the switching. In anycase it still works very well and charge time is much quicker than it used to be.
Thanks for the response guys.
Just had a question for your setup maxpower, in addition to your BCDC1225, do you have the redarc isolator installed and if so do you have the larger gauge wire with the override switch applied?

Buzzdog, I wired my set up in conjunction with a typical marine manual isolation switch (with the OFF, 1, 2, 1+2 positions). If I need to override the bcdc can do it this way. I ended up wiring it in 16mm cable I had lying around.

Redarc are easily contactable and happy to help with tech questions too. I am good mates with the manager in SA so if u get stuck with any of it let me know. I had a fair few questions when I was looking into it too.

Thanks mate, that's a pretty cool friend to have, do you take him out for a fish when he pops up?
I contacted redarc about using both the SBI isolator in conjunction with the BCDC charger, with regards to whether it could be applied to a marine environment. They came back to us pretty quickly and confirmed that yes you can, just keep it out of the weather/spray as you would with most other electronics.
Was wondering if you happen to have any pics of your setup, how have you wired up the BCDC charger with the 16mm cable?

Would it be better to use the BEP DVSR

http://www.bepmarine.com/product-mainme ... relay-dvsr

or the Redarc Islolator?

http://www.redarc.com.au/products/produ ... _12v_100a/

If the DVSR is chosen, can you use the redarc BCDC charger with it?

I dont have a photo mate but I had the VSR system before the redarc and it worked well. These are a pretty normal set up and do great job and fairly inexpensive.

The Redarc is taking it to another level though as its a multi stage charging system. Its designed to keep your battery at 100%. Charge it fast and then maintain it prolonging the battery life. Plenty of info online. One way to look at it is.....it's like having your battery connected to a 25amp multi stage charger (like a C-Tek) while your boat is running. Also you have the ability to see exactly what stage of charge you battery is at. I did a 6 day barra trip in my 4.6m boat recently and by the time I got back to the ramp batteries at 100%. Like nomad said above you rarely need to use any other charger if you do the kms. I plug in a solar panel when boats in storage to maintain the batteries.

Both designed to do slightly different things. Both do their job well.

Awesome, thanks. That's the reason I'm leaning towards redarc, the multi stage charging. Is your system one way from the starter batter to the Aux, or is your's both way?

Only one way. The start battery doesn't get the same special treatment as the deep cycle.

Cool, so much the same as your standard 4wd set up.
Sorry for all the retarded questions, just want to understand the situation and system thoroughly.
What would you do if your main goes flat? Jump from the second or swap the start with the 2nd battery?

Just bypass it via the manual switch - switch to battery 2 or battery 1+2 position.

Would bypassing the system damage the BCDC charger?

Is this similar to what you've got setup Maxpower, just so I can grasp the concept, excuse the quick crude pic....

No it just connects your outboard to battery 2 instead of battery 1.

Sorry, are you referring to the BEP isolator or the BCDC charger connecting to the 2nd battery?

Similar Buzzdog, I have split up certain loads over the two batteries but thats just preferences.

The BCDC is just a switch that works automatically. The BEP Switch is in parallel which means you can bypass (create another path) manually if your start battery is flat. Its the same as linking the two batteries with jumperleads, only easier, and no it wont damage the BDCD or VSR in any way. You can also turn it to the OFF position so that your outboard can be isolated from the batteries.

Check out the installation guide on the redarc site for different ways to install. Send me a PM if you get stuck, sorry to Hijack the post Blinky.

http://www.redarc.com.au/images/uploads ... Manual.pdf Thats for thh BCDC25 that I used which has the MPPT solar panel option which I noticed the BCDC20 doesnt.
