Re: Today's Darwin Storm
Flicken's right.
The circulating earth currents can run into thousands of amps from a nearby lightning strike. Simply switching off electrical equipment still has the earth connected at the switch and that's where the damage risk lies.
I've seen electrical earth busbars vaporised in some western electrical facility lightning strikes. The thick copper busbar (1 inch x 1/2 inch) vaporised and just some blobs of solidified molten copper spread around on walls and nearby equipment.
The strike doesn't come down. A "leader" finds a way to earth and produces a ionised path between charged cloud and earth. The "strike" is actually a discharge up to the charged cloud.

Was looking good coming down from the North today @ around 3:00pm.
Seems no matter which way it comes from it splits the whiskers before Darwin and goes around in the early season. No matter. A good slamming is inevitable soon.

Re: Today's Darwin Storm
There's a low generating at the top of the Gulf of C that looks like its going to head between Darwin and Katherine over the next few days. It should give the Alligator, Mary and Adelaide floodplain systems a touch touch-up with rain but may be a bit gentle on the wind side.
Once it passes through, drops s...loads over Kununurra and heads back out to sea, its expected to track the WA coastline and intensify.
Predicted wind speeds and pressure suggest it will be in the Cat4/5 by the time it reaches offshore of Dampier.
We had 7mm here today. First rain in months.
Frightened hell out of the cat who took off. He thought that I'd hosed him.

If the pattern from the Philippines for their last seasons comes down we could be in for a few more than BOM said to expect this season. Now forecasting up to 500mm in some places so looking good so far.

Better than nothing today ...
But whatever has fallen over the Top End has done very little for the Daly ... http://www.bom.gov.au/fwo/IDD60322/IDD6 ... .plt.shtml

So close...yet so far.... Seems like whenever it gets just before Darwin, its splits, or dissipates....
Mass-heat from Darwin pushing it all apart? Or gasses from the Gas-Plant?
