NT Severe Weather Warning: Damaging Winds & Heavy Rain

For people in Daly, Tiwi, Gregory and parts of Tanami districts.

Issued at 11:05 am Sunday, 28 January 2018.

ACTIVE MONSOON BRINGS HEAVY RAIN and DAMAGING WINDS

Weather Situation: A vigorous monsoonal flow through the Timor Sea is feeding into a monsoon low located over the Kimberley District in Western Australia. This low is expected to deepen and move slowly west. Squally monsoon rain and gusty thunderstorms are expected to continue for the next few days.

HEAVY RAIN which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is expected to continue over the Gregory, Daly and northern Tanami Districts.

24 hour totals of 50-100mm, with higher amounts of 150-200mm are possible over coastal areas. These conditions are likely to persist for the next few days.

DAMAGING WINDS with gusts of around 90 km/h are forecast for the Daly, Tiwi and northern Gregory and Districts.

Locations which may be affected include Darwin, Wadeye, Wurrumiyanga, Nauiyu, Lajamanu, Kalkarindji, Adelaide River, Milikapiti and Pirlangimpi.

A Severe Weather warning for dangerous surf is current for the west coast of the Top End and Tiwi District, as well as a Moderate Flood Warning for the Daly River and a Flood Watch for the North West and Bonaparte Coastal Rivers. For further details refer to http://www.bom.gov.au/nt/warnings.

Humpty Doo Collard Rd recorded 286 mm of rain and Noonamah recorded 228 mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9 am 28 January.

The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:
* secure loose outside objects and seek shelter when conditions deteriorate
* pull over if it is raining heavily and you cannot see, park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears
* avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current
* create your own sandbags if there is flooding, by using pillow cases or shopping bags filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home
* stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways
* ensure pets and animals are safe
* be prepared in case of power outages, have an emergency kit with a radio, torch, spare batteries and first aid kit
