Re: The Joint Strike Lemon?
FWIW I think the F35 will be very capable once they throw bulk money at it to sort out the bugs. Apparently it can now fly during wet weather. Now to fix the other 50 odd issues

Who knows, maybe when they fight they'll be taken out by older but more capable/reliable planes.
You are likely right re throwing cash but they throw such huge amounts of money at these things when there are hospital waiting lists a mile long etc, diseases that need research funding, etc etc. Aussies will die in hospital because of the funding foregone, an intangible number but a real one.

How many got sold?Matt Flynn wrote:Canada reckons our old Hornets are pretty good, they are buying them ... https://www.theguardian.com/australia-n ... snub-to-us
Nomad do you know what one of these jets are actually worth?
$500m at 68 cents in the dollar is only US$340. I reckon Canada just got another great Aussie deal.

Re: The Joint Strike Lemon?
The AUD and CAD are almost on par so its still a ½ Billion sale. We will need it to maintain the F35’s which cost around $60 000 per flight hour.
You can buy an ex Blue Angels F18 (which are really old airframes ) for around $10M us
They are only selling the old F/A18 A/B classics (the really old ones are called ‘legacy airframes’ and appear to be expendable ) some of which are over 30 y/o now. Some will be used for spare parts for the Canadians
RAAF has upgraded many of the old classics both intakes and electronics so they probably wont be selling them for a while– when we were doing the onsite photo shoot this year, they prevented us from taking shots of the upgraded (air intakes covered up) while they let us take shots of the standard ones
RAAF will be keeping the FA18 super hornets and of course the Growlers.
The old classics are to be replaced by the new F35 but who knows when they will arrive. They say that the sale of the old classics will force the F35 supplier to pull their fingers out and bring forward our jets supply – hopefully the whole fleet will be here by 2022
There are rumours that Canada will pull out of their order of the F35 for a variety of reasons.

Re: The Joint Strike Lemon?
By the look of these videos, they are progressing well with the in flight handling issues they had in the past.

Re: The Joint Strike Lemon?
I see that the entire Aus fleet of F35s has been grounded pending investigation (all 5 of them).
