Redfish ID

Post by Matt Flynn »

Many years ago when we pulled up little red fish off NT coastal reefs and wrecks we called them all reddies, or saddletail.

Mostly they were this species, Indonesian snapper (Lutjanus bitaeniatus) ... http://fishesofaustralia.net.au/Home/species/550

But they didn't all look the same.

Some were juveniles of largemouth nannygai, or saddletail (Lutjanus malabaricus) ... http://suntag.org.au/wp-content/grand-m ... us-jpg.jpg

And others were juveniles of smallmouth nannygai, or crimson sea perch (Lutjanus erythropterus) ... http://suntag.org.au/wp-content/grand-m ... us-jpg.jpg

There's another red fish called paddletail but I've only seen them out really wide at Evans Shoal etc ... http://www.flamboyantlyfishyfotos.com/w ... napper.jpg

The first-mentioned Indonesian snapper (Lutjanus bitaeniatus) seems to be really common on NT reefs around 20m+ deep, heaps of them at the Fentons and on the deepest Bynoe Wide reefs, quite a few on the Six Mile grounds too.
