Channel island GT beginners luck

Had a mate come up from Melbourne a few weeks back and he asked me to go GT fishing he'd been hanging out for ages dreaming about them nonstop.....

We put the boat in and headed out towards some big bommies that break through the surface out a bit from the beach on the northern tip of the island . They were just underwater by a metre. The sounder showed good bait and a couple of big ones nearby. So he sends out the stickbait and starts the retrieve a decent clip . Well bugger me it got creamed in the first 15m and only seconds into his GT career it was on. It thankfully headed out from the rock on the ripping current and the 6500 was screaming off line. I gave chsae in the boat and after a solid fight the 65lb whiplash had it beat and beside the boat. I tailed it for him and pulled it onboard 1st cast GT this is easy he grinned. We took a few snaps before sending it back in to bust off a few more anglers.
We headed back up to the rock and he had a few more casts and got smoked twice before it went quiet. Told you it was beginners luck I chuckled. We headed up to the ellengowan wreck for doughnut on the jigs then headed round to a few barra spots and got a feed of chromies to 78cm which went down nicely with chips n salad and a few cold beverages.

The lure is mounted on the wall hanging from his framed pic

Pretty sure he's moving up here soon after that session.

Hey mate !
Ripper GT I'm actually taken back that you guys got a good size one in the harbour !!
Water looks almost brown in the photo !?! Shows those fish are keen on a wide range of water conditions.

What kind of tidal movement do you need for that area ?
Neap / spring
High / low ?

Generally on GTs no run no fun
As long as it's not filthy .... but I've been on neaps n if theres bait the predators won't be far away they still have to eat regardless of what day / tide. Pick out a ''good ''day on the chart and have a go. we've done ok on the bridge plyons n powerline supports on the higher part of 6m days too if its too rough n windy on that side. The beauty of this area is theres always somewhere sheltered but the ramp is a mission on spring lows once you've had enough of it. Its got some good scrape marks from quality reversing on the culvert beside it n can be a bit hectic in big swell we usually launch at lizzy bridge for these trips.

Bring spare braid to replace it out there when u get smoked ... been blown away on 80lb trolling more times than i could count .... lucky i don't have a missus to explain the costs to as a sppol of whiplash a few stick baits n a bit of fuel is well over a hundred bucks

I did get one at yirrkala out of gove 102 on a curado 200 but it burnt my thumb to a cinder n was pure ass not to get spooled on 20lb fireline n my little sis got a metrey on 30lb mono again more luck than skill n they chased it all around melville bay for an hour.

She's over them now.

Check out the thread "metre barra the horse club ....other stonkers " there some good ones in there too including a 102 from drs gully on a bait caster landbased !

Some days u get lucky others you just get made to look like a complete amateur.

Gotta be in it to win it mate n u definitely won't get them off the couch.

That's a horse for the harbour! I have suspected that area would attract the GTs but I haven't really had a crack at it yet.

Wow, it has to be a coincidence that your boat is identical to those used by Eclipse FNQ Charters, the same guys who stole your photo :)
