Strategic purposes of course.

In the case of strategic access to Aus, China didn't need to send us aid. They simply bought access to the only strategic port to the north (closest to China) that we had already built--Darwin.

We're a clever country alright.

Yep. Australia is currently the most indebted nation in the world, although the Swiss might have recently taken the lead.

We are severely in hock to the banks, selling ourself off to overseas interests, and keeping economic data alive via immigration, rather than building manufacturing and export, research etc. As dumb as it gets.

It's interesting because on the other side you have Indonesia, and the two countries have a chequered history, you weren't allowed to take Chinese reading materials and other stuff into Indonesia for many years.
