Easy enough for the consumer to help - wear only natural fibres (cotton) and use refillable containers whenever possible. Avoid buying plastic when there is an alternative.

Funny though, cotton has its own set of problems ...

Might just be too many people now?

Yep, a new system is required, this one will end badly unless there is intervention.
