Surprise Jack

Post by bbekk2 »

:fishy:
I have lived in the Territory for most of my life and I remember fishing Rapid Creek after school with my mates in the 70's. Later, when I was at the Darwin Community College in 1981 I caught plenty of small barra on pink vibrotails down in a hole near the mouth, my first fish on plastics. However, nothing could have prepared me for the fish that I caught there yesterday.
There is a section of Rapid Creek that I regularly fish for tarpon , trevally and small Queenfish. I had caught 4 or 5 trevally on small curl tails when I decided to change my plastic to a 3 inch stickbait. (A berkley Powerbait minnow in Watermelon colour). I cast it to the edge of the hole and began a slow hopping retrieve. I was shocked when a real heavy hit registered up the 6 pound braid. After a great fight, I managed to land a 51cm jack, my largest creek jack to date. Has anyone caught a bigger jack out of Rapid Creek?

Great fish from a small sandy coastal creek, a favored habitat of Mangrove Jack, only caught one from Rapid Creek, the Vibrotail that came in very small sizes was the lure to use on Barramundi, hooking a barra was easy staying connected was another matter, tarpon were also common.

Nice Jack, well done
Love catching them, fierce fighters :-)
If there is water and it holds fish, then it is fun trying to fool them into eating what you offer!!

Especially when you can see them!

Yep you're spot on about the size. It was the smallest of the Blue Fox vibrotails that did the damage on the Rapid Creek barra. In fact, small soft plastics under 3 inches are the go for fishing Rapid Creek. I picked up a large Halco Rooster popper that someone had lost. It was more appropriate to catching GT and Queenfish than anything that lives in coastal creeks.
