2018 NT fishing survey begins

Post by Matt Flynn »

PRESS RELEASE

The second part of the Territory Labor Government’s new recreational fishing survey has begun, with surveys taking place at boat ramps across the NT.

The survey is part of Territory Labor's $50 million investment in recreational fishing, which will help boost the sector and create jobs.

Telephone surveys have already begun, through which fishos are invited to take part in a 12-month diary program where they record their fishing effort.

The boat ramp surveys will involve Fisheries NT staff asking anglers about their day on the water, to provide a more complete picture of recreational fishing activity in the Territory by both Territorians and visitors.

The recreational fishing survey will provide Fisheries NT with the most up-to-date data on fishing effort, including the number of people who fish, where and when they go fishing, the species of fish they target, and how much time and money they invest in the activity.

A final report from the surveys will be publically available. All information provided by survey respondents will remain confidential.

Minister for Primary Industry and Resources, Ken Vowles said: “The Territory Labor Government is investing a huge amount of money in the recreational fishing sector to ensure the Territory remains at the top of the list when it comes to world-class fishing destinations.

“This will boost the sector and those industries that support it, meaning jobs for Territorians.

“The last survey was completed in 2010, so a new survey is well overdue to provide us with the latest data. This data will help us invest our historic $50 million into the sector in a way that provides the best outcomes for fishos.”

Assistant Minister for Primary Industry and Resources, Jeff Collins said: “The data collected through the new recreational fishing survey will not only help the fishos get the most out of the Territory Labor Government’s investment – it is also critical for the effective, sustainable management of our fisheries.

“The Territory has some of the most sustainable fishing in the world, and this Government’s investment in the sector will help it stay that way.”

AFANT executive officer David Ciaravolo said: “I encourage all fishers to do their bit to participate in the boat ramp surveys, and help Fisheries NT collect this vital information.

"These surveys are extremely important to help us plan for an even brighter fishing future."
