Barra netters 'in trouble'

Talk about bungled boat ramps, net buybacks, marine no-go zones, mining disasters etc here.

Barra netters 'in trouble'

Gotta be some sort of marketing failure when you can't sell your wild caught barra in this hungry world.

That said, I was turned off buying barra when I saw swampies and salties mixed together for sale, obviously netted near a river mouth, no way would I buy swampie barra.

But saltie barra, a delicacy! Has its own flavour. You realise how good it is when you don't live in the NT because you miss it.

Local saltwater fish down here is $30-$50 a kilo.

Sad to see jobs go but industries change. Not many farriers, coopers or wainwrights left in town either...

And the fact that retail price hasn't dropped by 40% it was stated that no one is taking a huge margin due to processing costs etc ?
Did those costs suddenly go up 40% ?
Please
The netters don't bother me, most of them work in remote areas anyway

Wow. What a crock. There are 15 net licences at 1000m of net per licence in the Territory, if it's costing these guys $30k for a 3 week stint ie. 10k a week to run their operation even if holding multiple licences they need to look at their operating costs. I worked on a Shark netting boat at one point working 5000m in 100m to 300m of water with three blokes so I can't possibly see 1000m of net being a big deal even wth the need to work out of smaller boats. If its so bad at the moment time for net buybacks at a reduced value!

Yep, if they’re running at a loss, buy them all out cheaply, no more netting in the NT.

Massive fishing tourism potential, ‘Come to the NT, wild Barra on tap!’ and think of all those Anson Bay metreys that will be available.

To be honest I was surprised just how few licences there were, when you look at the potential for fishing tourism related growth and employment this just doesn't seem to make sense any more.

Yep, I'm not fussed at all....I can't remember the last time I bought fish! About the only seafood I will buy is prawns, scallops rarely.
No matter where you go, there you are!
