Katherine/Daly barramundi poisoned

Talk about bungled boat ramps, net buybacks, marine no-go zones, mining disasters etc here.

Katherine/Daly barramundi poisoned

Post by wonderwobler »

Fish (barra) in the Katherine area have tested to "elevated levels" to PFAS. There is no such thing as elevated levels! fish don't normally have PFAS in them.

This is the Daly River we are talking about, ALL the Barra that visit the Katherine area are Daly River stock, authorities are mumbling that the fish should not be eaten.

All those fish will at some point move back down the Daly as part of the life cycle.

At what point do we insist that the Daly River be given the status as a living thing and afford it the environmental protection it not only requires but deserves.

All rivers should be afforded this protection.

Barra is not a fish people should be scoffing in large quantities anyway, it can be naturally high in mercury, and if it also contains PFAS ... far better to catch and release.

It's not just the NT, the Hobart estuary has some of the most polluted sediment in the world because the government was dumb enough to give heavy industry a licence to dump into the water. That estuary could have been an eternal food bowl ...

Geez, who would have thought pumping chemicals into the Katherine river would hav an effect on fish in the Daly?
I heard the media conference yesterday and it left more unanswered questions than it dealt with

Yes, and add in whatever is coming out of Edith River.

Not to mention what is happening at McArthur River and Rum Jungle. Sad.

The Daly River is being used as a waste disposal drain.

Mt.Todd gold mine dumping heavy metals, Katherine township dumping all its waste water full of phosphate and detergents, the Defense dept. dumping fire retardants and other toxins into the aquifer, farm fertilizers and weed poison run off into the waterways, its a very poor future for the river.

We should all hang our heads in shame, we have accepted this behavior and contributed to the situation with our complacency and worship of the dollar.

The younger people who read this will experience the outcome of these actions, they will say things like "they used to catch fish in this drain"

The environment is going down hill and picking up speed, i reckon we will see a rapid decline of river health over the coming years.

I'm glad to be as old as I am, those born today will only be able to read about what a special place it once was.

That is so true. we all are way too busy with the 'important' things in our lives to really do anything about the things that will affect those who follow behind.

Most people say that the environment is very important but they will put poop on greenies.
I always remind them that without the said greenies actually getting of their collective bums and doing things, the place would be much worse off than it now is

Many people still put poop on me of the time i spent actually prosecuting numerous perpetrators (and locking them up) because of their environmental vandalism. we actually did something about the problem
But that was in another state where the govt actually believed in preventing pollution.

This NT govt (and all of those that have preceded it) need to be held to account for allowing mines to pollute and just walk away leaving us to clean up the mess
and for allowing numerous organisations to pour cr.p into the waterways uncontrolled

the kids of the future will shake their heads and ask why we left the place in such a mess.
Im too old to take action anymore but those with kids need to do something - NOW

we will only take action when it directly affects us.

Do greenies actually practice what they preach? My experience is generally not. The secret lies in the balance, the sustainable balance. It is all to easy to have this idea of a utopian existence with the environment but that is simply far attached with reality. We all consume resources and products of industry in our lives everyday so we all have poop on our hands in some form or another.

There are things we could do tomorrow with legislation. Like being forced to carry non-plastic drink containers and just buy refills from shops.

Biodegradable bags only.

No more small plastic items that can be made of other things. Straws, for example, were once made of paper. Shopping bags were paper.

Paper and cardboard can be recycled.

Plastic should be deemed an item to be used only in specific situations.

It's not all bad news, it's a plus for catch and release fishing.

I have to say that probably 95% of the the greenies that have met do the right thing and practice what they preach - its a pain in the arse sometimes.
I used to work with a bloke in NSW who was an enviiormental officer during the week and attended protests on the weekend.
he used to shave in the shr to save poop going in the drains etc etc.
he was probably the worst/best i have known.
they can tell you what form of power generation produces the least waste -'from cradle to grave' incl manufacturing to disposal.
dome are really dedicated and believe in what they are doing. i know of a couple of lawyers who resigned the EPA to work for bugger all at the EDO. A couple joined greenpeace on the steve irwin.
Thats dedication
of course those who are trendy greenies, like the ones who use cloth bags for shopping but buy things wrapped in plastic.
each to their own but without them we would really be buggered.
Governments like NT dont give a rats
