Diver found dead in croc-infested waters
Diver had injures caused by an animal
Post mortem to determine cause of death
A SCUBA diver who went missing in crocodile-infested waters off Cape York has been found dead.

Police say the 49-year-old appears to have been injured by a marine animal.

They refused to elaborate, but the area is known for saltwater crocodiles.

The man had been reported missing after he failed to surface from a spear fishing dive in waters off Bushie Islet, in the Cairncross Island Group, approximately three nautical miles off the east coast of Cape York.

The Cairns man was reported missing by a friend who had been diving with him at the time.

The second man returned to a moored boat around 12.30pm to discover that the other man had failed to return.

An air and sea search coordinated by federal authorities was launched yesterday afternoon with initial searches locating some of the man’s equipment.

Water police found the man's body earlier today.

A post-mortem will be held.

What a horrible way to go i reckon.
I used to dive up to 3 days/nioghts a week many years ago down south.
The only time we saw sharks is when we went looking for them.

No way I'd get into these dirty waters up here. Getting softer

Old diving rule is you always take a buddy and if you loose them during the dive you surface, maybe it needs to be the same for spear fishing too

i'd be surprised if he was on scuba at the time if he was indeed spearfishing. the media may have reported this incorrectly.

I doubt it too, what I was trying to say is maybe he should have had someone with him, to many things can happen on your own. 2 guys off Sydney went spear fishing only to find that their boat had sunk upon returning, lucky they were able to swim to the nearby rocks and get out.
