First Sailfish for Rick!

My mate Rick Spangler came up for 2 weeks, with the plan of chasing sails. Unfortunately with my 5M boat KIA we reverted to fishing in the 12fter. We were sick of barra so we went out with another mate in his 4.8 top ender.

We trolled a selection of Williamson bellyho and dorodos and had a pitch bait ready, neither of us had ever raised, hooked or landed a sail before.

We raised 4, hooked and landed 1, it was Ricks first sail and he was very happy. The sea was terrible yesterday and there were waves breaking over the bow of the topender while we were trolling, but still a great day. Needless to say it was a great trip for Rick with over 100 barra landed in two weeks, a metre thready, goldies, macks and his first sail!

Check out the video I have made of the sailfish capture.

Mate, we were fishing between longlost and bowra shoals, we got the hookup about 1km from bowra shoals on the small shoal with the depth 10 on the charts.

Thanks for the advice Double Haul! To be honest I wasn't exactly sure how to land it, once I grabbed its bill it started doing a rap dance and I could hang one, so the second time I just grabbed it and then put a hand under the belly and lifted it in while she was kicken!

GoveMatt- I am keen as, will be there June 18th for 12 weeks, will give you a ring when I get there. If you want some tackle from Darwin let me know and I will buy it from Fishing and Outdoor World and bring it over.

By the way the guys at Fishing and Outdoor World supplied me with the lures and advice to land the sailfish, they will beat any prices you see around town too. (*end Shameless plug)
