Does Darwin need a multi-ramp boat park?

Post by Matt Flynn »

Does Darwin Harbour need a boat park like the new one at Townsville? (see pic)

Townsville has about 200,000 people while Darwin has 160,000. The NT has a high rate of boat ownership.

Or would it be overkill?

If it is needed, where to build it?

Major difference between the 2 is the tide variations. To build a ramp in t/ville would need to be only ¼ that of Darwin so they could build 4 to our one
Dinah bch fills very quickly
One I used to launch from in Newcastle (big population compared to Darwin) could take 4 vehicles wide at the same time
On the central coast, you could find a ramp every 20 kms or so
when I travelled around Australia none had lock up compounds – this may have by now though (Except for private yacht clubs)
so back to the Q.
fix dinah carpark, build a compound,
we just need people to do the right thing and follow the basic rules. Rig up before you drive down the ramp. Tie up at the end of the ramp, move quickly and stop mucking around AND DON’T PUSH IN LIKE THEY DO ON THE DALY

Major issue that really needs looking at, a lot of boat owners dont need pontoon to launch and retrieve so even making ramps wider to allow more lanes would speed up things

5 bucks to launch at Dinah at the weekend would spread the load over the harbour ramps. Could go towards some security cameras

Wider ramps much more practical and more likely to happen. extend them to a 6 wide ramp.

After what I seen at Dinah on Sunday ,yes for sure.

If and when I just hope more thought is put into it to get it right.
Dinah was redone Wrong ,Buff has been redone Wrong .
The jury is still out on Dundee , and still waiting to see how much
they STUFF up Shady.

All for wider ramps and better parking , we just don't need another
half arsed attempt .

Dinah is the first location I'd fix ,then Nightcliff .

Darwin will need at least 3 or 4 New 4 lane ramps within the next 10 years.

Dinah just needs to be widened. Fill in the bay to the left a bit wih rock and square off the existing car park. make it four lanes. As it is, with people who can drive 3 cars can fit on the ramp but most people are inconsiderate and just back down the middle but thats another story.

Pontoons speed up the launch/retrieve process by getting boats away from the shallow area out of the way. ie, launch and move the boat to the end of the pontoon while the trailer is being parked.
otherwise the just launched boat has to come back in to the shallow area so the driver can get onboard

Pontoons are a huge help....Nightcliff needs upgrading but parking is and will continue to be an issue as there is no room for expansion. Those responsible for Buff Creek upgrade need to be publicly shamed......Upgrade Channel Island to double lane with pontoon

Gov - Wee need Pontoons adding & multi lane boat ramps now!

Completely agree with the rest of the comments, that Pontoons significantly speed the process up & are a lot safer than without.
Darwin is massively behind in this area & i cannot believe that Dinah only has one lane - No wonder its chaos!

Dundee will be an utter nightmare!
All the space in the world with one dual lane with no pontoon.
For solo fisherman, it will be easier using the tractor at Dundee.

I think every ramp in the NT should be like Palmerston's (Elizabeth) but with multi lanes.

I cant use Buff creek in my fibreglass boat because there is no pontoon to tie up to.

BTW - dinah has 2 lanes - even fit 3 cars wide if they can drive

Kick the tenders off at Dinah would make everything run a lot smoother and faster. All we're asking is for the law to be enforced.

(Note I'm not in Darwin 2016 so this is really a comment for my 2013-2015 experiences)
