Just saw the ABC report on this, Abbot is guaranteeing no tax divisions
But you can't stop progress, time will tell if its good or bad
A big influx of revenue can't be a bad thing

It is inevitable
All good things eventually come to an end
The rural will become suburbia within 20 years

I should reiterate, as long as there is no importing of labour force
Miss Rhinehart can kiss my ass, keep Aussie jobs for Aussies

I'd love to know where they will get the drinking water for the added population. They are already talking about closing Manton dam to recreation and having water restrictions within 5 yrs. Not too many hilly places around the NT to put another dam.

I think its a step in the right direction.

Reduce population growth in already highly populated areas which suck up excessive amounts of resources in providing services in an already crowded environment. More and more of the economic pie needed to do that.

Providing similar services in regional areas needs fewer resources and spreads development.

The US has a system where the largest city in the state is not the capital.

For example, Los Angeles isn't the capital of California. The much smaller city of Sacremento is and it has the seat of Govt and admin centres etc. All other states are the same.

Not so in Aus. The biggest city becomes the capital and sucks up services disproportionally as it grows. At the expense of regions.

Aus does have a part of the constitution that prevents the Feds from formulating laws giving preference between states or betwee parts of states. So if that can be worked around then the Feds may be able to lead.

(as an aside I believe the different tax zones applying in Aus are unconstitutional for that reason)

If not, then the states themselves will have to implement it.

You might want to look at this.

The Office of Northern Australia. Its been around for years. Used to be attached to the Prime Ministers office. Any Fed Govt proposal that impacted on Northern Australia (north of the Tropic) had to be run past the PM. That's when we had PMs who cared.

I went to one of these committee meetings once in Townsville in 1998. Big yalkfest but not much came out of it.

http://www.regional.gov.au/regional/ona/index.aspx

You'll find some of the answers to your water questions in there.

Full Circle again.

The place was full of Commonwealth public servants once.( I am a recovering public servant from 10 years ago) But "progress" centralised many things back to Canberra and many of us lost our jobs & families moved away.... and now someone has a brainware to beef it up again? It all sounds good until it costs money. Many Govt depts had the "remote allowance" removed to make moving up here less attractive & those depts that didnt remove it had a migration to them.

Anyway I always go fishing & camping in Zone A to get my tax rebates as it is. (Dont tell Tony but there already is some sort of Tax division out there)
