Just heard alvey reels to shut its doors at carol park Brisbane. Not enough sales to continue manufacturing. Guess when they never break or wear out and they aren't much chop for soft plastics ..... your doomed. They are my absolute favourite l would have 25 or more of em that have decked many many thousands of fish (possibly between 20 and 30 thousand over the last 45 years) I should pull them out for a picture. Anyway it's over after 97 years.

I have 6 of those 925s, 3x 651 C&E5, 2x 650A5, 5x 600A5 plus a fair few smaller models that have come along to tackle specific estuary situations like some 55A5 etc they were lighter but l would always go back to the bigger sizes. Usually run tortue line on the rock and beach models with the dark blue Japanese line and of late 110lb whiplash braid on the 925s. There is also a couple of retired 450mm diameter reef king winches to pick up from the shed at Fraser when we get back up there. Guess I did my bit to keep them going.

More than a few people got shocks when I was in the NT with what could be done with them. Ask Ghound and 2 rods and Tran to name a few.

Sad to hear.

Dad had a timber Alvey. Probably still a few knuckle scars out there from the old Alveys ...

I liked the deep spool model with star drag, we used it for mulloway and snapper off the jetties and breakwalls in Adelaide.

It get no easier to read about. They sound like one big family instead of a company structure. Interesting about the power thing. This renewable at all costs is costing us our country while the rest of the world laughs on. Sell the raw materials OS for zip so they came burn it cheap a few thousand km away in the developing countries. What a joke if the GW experts are right it's the same atmosphere wherever our coal iron ore bauxite gets burnt we just go broke and watch on.

That's why AGW will continue - competition between businesses is immense or you go broke, plus there is a need to feed the ever-growing masses.

Good to see Alvey kicking on a bit longer. The Aussie surf market appears to not be big enough, but I thought they would sell quite a few winches. But then, that market is probably not so big either, and the reels last too long.

Production costs are huge in Australia.

If mankind eventually reverts back to cave life, future fishos will scratch around in dumps for old Alveys, not baitcasters ...

Have to agree.
If we are going to dig it up it's going to end up in the sky, weather it's our sky or China's / India's sky. It's all the same sky.
If Australians feel so strongly against green house gasses then don't dig it up, and Work out how we are going to cut the budget by 8% (really need more to get back in surplus).
It is utterly ridiculous to dig it up but give othe countries the benefit of the cheap power it produces.
I think our environmental policy should be so simple.
We will do what ever the g20 agree to, no matter how strict. It we are all equally screwing our self economicly then it's all good.
Never owned an alvey, but it seems i should get one or two for beach fishing (not that I have done much before)

I think your view on our current power price issue being solely connected to renewables is a bit simplistic mate. You will see behind all the LNP rhetoric that the massive unsustainable increase in power costs in Australia is not so much connected to renewables but rather to flawed and greedy policy decisions...ie: privatisation of our power infrastructure and gold standard deals for multi nationals not the least of which is the sale of our gas offshore without keeping any in reserve for the domestic market. The very Political parties and interests that sold off our power assets and reaped the financial benefits are the very same that now blame renewables for the price hikes. Our power infrastructure is now mostly owned by offshore companies...Chinese mostly....resources sold to companies cheaply...the very same companies who use tax loopholes to not even pay tax on money made in Australia...and in some cases those very companies getting refunds from the ATO as by cooking the books can show their Australian arm of the company was/is run at a loss.

But yeah....blame renewables!

Yep, it's terrible management. You have to wonder who profits from these backroom deals.

Tasmania should have the cheapest electricity in the country thanks to hydro, but they screwed it up. They laid a cable to Victoria to sell electricity, but power prices went up anyway. Then the cable predictably broke, at great expense. The hydro lakes are now drained out in dry weather. So even the trout suffer from the electricity bungling.

And lower rainfall is the trend down this way.

Only solution is to cut yourself off from every utility, but it is not so easy to do. For example, they will still make you pay for water if the pipe runs past your house block.
