Hi. heading back to Sarawak again in April but this time I will get in a fish for barra and jacks near Miri. I am trying to find out about the black bass fishing in the Borneo / Kalimantan area. I have tracked down some info but it is really hard to find how to contact local guides etc. The black bass population is apparently the only one outside of PNG. Any clues appreciated. Planning a trip there in the dry in 2014 for a few weeks fishing. One place i have found looks interesting. Riverside tenting, dugout canoeing downstream all day and then by road transport back to base camp in evening. Pretty basic but it sounds interesting. To get there I need to fly out of Jakarta to Kalimantan and then a few flights from there, then another 5 hours in a 4wd. I'm still chasing this one up but there are other rivers in Sabah in the border that have reasonable populations that look interestng too. cheers

Can't comment on Borneo black bass, but Borneo's Sipadan Island is the best snorkel and dive you could ever do - walk off the beach and then 20m to a straight coral wall 2000ft deep. Marlin jumping in eyeshot of the beach. No fishing tho.

Open air jetty restaurant at Semporna worth a visit too, opposite Pulau Bum Bum

I've spoken to a guide over there called Martin Wiles.......he operates from Sabah........yet to cofirm anything with him yet.........he says that the Black Bass there DNA up as mangrove jack..........if you have seen pictures you will know they look nothing like jack and IMO are bass.......I have caught Bass in PNG/ New Britain and the fish from Borneo/Sabah are bass as far as i care.

The guy that owns the tackle shop in Lankawi showed me some awesome pics of really large fish....50lb plus......love to get over there in the future and have a crack......much easier than going to PNG again from here and cheaper.

They look different to me. Have a look at this link and although similar they are different http://www.fishonmag.com/issues/BorneoBlackBass/

I'll do some research while i am there this trip. I have heard there is a group of people in Bali that fish for bass and other species in Kalimantan. I had a contact and will have to find it and see if I can get more info. On ground costs for 6 days was around $800 all up. Just a few cheap flights on top of that.

As we all know, once out of Aus it is cheap as chips to get around. I don't mind roughing it so it all comes pretty easy.

Getting plenty ticked off my bucket list so its all good.

April not really a great time, but that's when I'm in Indo . My wife is from Indo, so that will help! Sept seems the best time. Great story and pics at fishy forum, and another at fishing kaki forum.
