A Harvard expert says there are strange things about the coronavirus that suggest it may not have skipped to humans from bats/snakes/gremlins at the Wuhan wildlife markets.

To quote the expert (https://twitter.com/DrEricDing) ...

1) Seafood market not the source.
2) This RNA #coronavirus mutates really fast.
3) Has unusual middle segment never seen before in any coronavirus.
4) Not from recent mixing.
5) That mystery middle segment encodes protein responsible for entry into host cells.

Meanwhile, all those locked down Chinese cities - it makes you wonder.

Best place to be is out in the fresh air, fishing!

Or start making trendy face masks ...

The Harvard epidemiologist's posts are worth watching ... https://twitter.com/DrEricDing

He is a little less conservative with his comments than some other experts.

He is now saying it is most similar to a bat virus, dunno if this means he has changed his tune on the earlier quote.

Meanwhile, the WHO director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is copping flak for the WHO's response so far ... https://twitter.com/DrTedros/status/1222543539587964930

I lived in Darwin when swine flu kicked off on the other side of the planet, and it was into Darwin quite quickly. Lots of people got it. But it was a flu a few years earlier that really hit me, felt like a sack of potatoes on my chest, could imagine dying from it.

Most constantly sick though was when my kids were very young and were going to a public childcare facility ... we were all constantly crook.

Taking precautions is wise, sooner rather than later.

All respect to people of Chinese descent, life is a struggle living among 1.5 billion, under a semi-communist dictatorship.

China is doing a lot more to quarantine the virus than other nations.

A live world map of reported coronavirus.

I don't see any reported deaths outside China.

213 deaths out of 9783 confirmed cases in mainland China only equates to a 2.2% mortality rate or a 97.8% survival rate.

SARS had a mortality rate of 9.5% and Ebola 90%.

Swine flu 9-12% mortality rate. (also a coronavirus)

So what's the fuss all about with this novel coronavirus?

Bit of a media beat-up with the 'prophets of doom" society jumping on board when its a slow news period like Trump's boring impeachment trial or GB exiting the EU?

China fudging the figures? I don't believe so 'cos if the mortality rate was higher, it'd be reflected in figures in other countries as deaths there.

Latest "educated opinions" are that it is a natural virus, but there's still argument about the source, and it may have been circulating before December.

It is apparently bad enough to cause a Spanish flu type spread if they don't nail it quickly, as it is infectious without symptoms, and spreads easily.

Vaccines are being worked on, something that is in the world's favour compared with the flu pandemic back in 1918.

Not the end of strange stories though, China has just had a big H5N1 bird flu outbreak in the same region.

A big concern for Australia and other countries is the sudden loss of Chinese business. Governments will have to step in and help businesses stay open.

Stats still show a mortality rate of 2%.

Pneumonia and Influenza have close to the same.

Once again, what's all the fuss about?

Good for Aust media headlines but that's about all. Stock-market (both Aus and Intl) also thinks that its all a beat up.

It must be worse than flu or they would not have shut half the planet down. The cost will be in billions.

Probably easy to beat the bug if you take precautions, but many people won't.

Was just thinking how all the Chinese pigs were smashed by that unprecedented pig plague last year, and now this, and now also bird flu ... interesting start to the year.

Thoughts to the Chinese people, must be bl..dy awful their right now.

I guess that having lots of people in close proximity to each other will result in the passing on of bugs of all sorts to each other.

This city that the bug originated in has a population of 11,000,000 and its only 1 city! Half the population of Aus in 1 city.

They've gotta be shoulder to shoulder in that city. No wonder any bug spreads quickly.

I think the rest of the world is surprised by the apparent speed of the contagion rather than thinking about what the effect of the bug actually is.

How come we don't hear about this sort of stuff originating in India with its huge population?

Mortality rate world wide still only 2%.
