Ultimate Jig outfit for NT waters

Post by Makrel »

I mostly fly fish but I am enjoying the jigging I have been doing recently.

I have a Saltiga 4500 on a rod that is more general purpose than jig specialised and I think I will splash out and buy myself a jigging rod.

Over the years I have done away with buying cheaper tackle as I always seem to upgrade it quickly and have no need for the cheaper item in the long term.

I am therefore interested in a good quality rod to match the Saltiga spinning reel to. I will use 40 - 120gm jigs I guess for Macks and reefies. so a rod that fits this description what I am after.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I use a 4000 saltiga on a 1-3 venom, 4500 saltiga on a 3-5 venom and a 4500 saltiga on a 6ft saltiga.

My favourite is the 1-3 venom combo cause in my opinion anything over 1-3 pe in the nt is an overkill.

Up until now I would not have had an opinion on this subject but as Jeffish can attest I am in love with my Wilson live fibre Venom 40-60lb Gulf Bass Coupled with a 5000SW Stella and 300m of 50lb Shimano Ocea Jigger braid. Ok, so it's not strictly a jigging outfit and it's not exactly cheap either BUT, the beauty of it is it can do pretty much anything. I can't speak highly enough of the combo. I took it to Flat Top Banks and didn't use anything else and have since caught plenty of Trevs, Mackerel and even some Coral Trout on the jig with it and it has absolutely owned anything it has come up against. I also expect it will be an awesome combo for switching Sails and Marlin. But because the 50lb Ocea braid is so thin (equivalent to 20lb normally) it still makes for an awesome casting outfit as well. So buy the live fibre Venom and the braid and put it on the Saltiga and you will have an unbeatable outfit.
Cheers,
John.

I use a Wilson Venom 6' PE3-5 Crank bait with Canyon HS-15. Tough as nails and the rod doubles as a great barra rod when I replace the reel with a Calcutta D. Caught a 121cm jewfish on it a week ago in shallow water

Sorry, should have read it was for a spin reel in the first place :banghead: Disregard everything you just read

Thanks for the input guys. Lots of support for Venom rods.

I have ended up getting Jigging Master Ocean Devil, and in all the excitement bought a Diawa Catalina 5000 for it. I went the 5000 over the 4000 size because of the retrieve rate of 1.21m per crank.

I will let you know how she goes as I am headed to the Vernons tomorrow.

Maybe I should ask Santa for a Venom Jigging rod for Christmas as you surely need 2 of every set up?

have a look at the samaki range. pretty good rods and reasonably cheap.

i use a samaki zing extreme 12-25pd with canyon hs-15 for jigging and bottom bouncing. very light set up and plenty of power in both rod and reel. i then remove the canyon and put on curado 300 for trolling the big rivers.
