Hahahaha, I actually tried this method once. Do it in the garden, coz it is messy as hell. Had me mate hold a clear tub lid above the fish, cos there was scales flying everywhere. Very funny to watch.

I havent scaled a fish for more than 10 years - even small fish are skinned now. Can i ask why you want to scale it?

Hey nomad!

Just personal preference mate! Missus & i quite like our fish with skin on..
My wife is a chef and shes also asian.... Fish cooked whole is one of the main ways they cook..
especially crispy whole fish.... Doesnt cook up so crispy without skin..! ;)

Going to order one of those commercial electric scalers i reckon...

Same here mate. We Asians like to either fry or steam the whole fish, minus the guts and gills of course. Only time we fillet is if, I actually catch something bigger than the wok. It's a bl..dy big wok, may I add. Lol

Ship stores have some stainless steel curved ones that are the best I have used. Will cost about $30 though.

I even bake my fish with the scales on and then just peel the skin and scales off
If you want crispy skin you have to scale ,I use a table spoon it works well
