Dual batteries

Post by COOPS »

Does anyone run Engels in their tinny? Thinking of putting in a dual battery system so I can run a 40 litre Engel on extended trips.

Easily done?
Won’t drain batteries down while fishing very remote areas?

I just set mine up the same as my car. Installed a deep cycle battery for the Engel and electric and used a Redarc Isolator like this,
https://www.redarc.com.au/smart-start-sbi-12v-100a.
Should never drain the starting battery as it isolates from the deep cycle when voltage drops below 12.7v

No electric, Coops?

One like DAZ suggested would work ok.

The second battery will charge OK while u're running the motor. Engle 40s run at a low duty cycle and only draw about 3 amps when compressor kicks in and out. Last a couple of days without charging if you dont rummage around in it too much with lid open.

I run one here at times and also used to on Roper.

Im thinking of doing the same, taking my 50l camp fridge in the boat. I already got 2 batterys, 1 is the main start run and a back up deep cycle 100amp hr to run electrics while motor not running.

Newer model Engels are designed to turn off before they flatten the battery completely. Apparently so there's enough juice left to start. Not so sure that idea would work with a 200 series Cruiser though.

What motor are you running on your tinny? If it's Honda (new) they've got smart sensors that will crank the amps up even at idle to recharge quicker.

If it's a small tinny, A small Redarc would be the way to go or if you've got the room an isolated setup.
