Motorguide Question

Hi guys

Just wondering if any one has got a motorguide Xi5 that flogs around on the quick release bracket??

I’ve got both a Minn Kota and a motorguide. Different boats but the MK is rock solid while the MG rattles all over the place.

Anyone rectified this? Looks to just be poorly made bracket.

Was going to change it out for a Minn Kota but not sold on the self deploy extra. Just looks like another thing to go wrong.

Cheers

Chris

My motor guide is rock solid on the quick release bracket, hard to see how they would flop around on that, is the bottom half of the bracket secured to the boat good and tight?

Yeah bottom parts solid as a rock. It is just the play between the bottom puck/top plate/pin.

Might we be a dud bracket. Just don’t know anyone local with one to try.

I've got the same issue with my MG. Was told by the shop that thats just the way they are. Bought the 4 blade prop and that helped a bit but still get moments when I think the whole lot is going to fall in the drink...

Different issue but ive got corrosion/electrolysis under the paint on the prop housing and was told that this is something MG have identified and will be covered by warrantee.

I’m in the exact same boat.... so to speak. Spoke to Michael and the reckons that’s just how they are. Although the newer ones are not soo bad apparently (my one is about 2 years old and been like it from day 1)
He suggested to take out the washers from under the mounting plate (even tho instructions say to have washers.)

My old minn Kota was solid as.

As to the corrosion issue they will fix under warranty and IOB were quite good. Although I had about 5 different issues come us after getting it done, was going my head in.
Seems to be finally sorted (touch wood) after about 7 trips to IOB and about 5 trips where you think it’s all good and then not be able to use it.

Not sure if this is the same issue but I had a heap of play in my bracket. Hard to pick up in the photos but I stuck some neoprene strips under the bracket about 12 months ago. My problem sorted.

Sounds as though it and the corrosion are quite common problems. Have had my corrosion fixed just need to fix the wobbles. IOB tell me the three blade prop helps but I might try the strips underneath. Or buy another Minn Kota and be done! The whole sneaky approach of an electrics stealth is lost when the bl..dy things rocks back and forwards!

You need to use one, it sells itself. I was a skeptic once too. It just gives you full control instead of relying on anyone else.

If going the auto deploy guys ensure you look after them, wash down completley after every trip, keep the red dirt out of them and spray with a lubricant. They have a tendency to burn out pretty quick with out really good maintenance. The auto deploy drive doesn't have the best seal, and the brass contacts corrode pretty badly and quickly with excess salt build up.

That’s what I keep hearing. Need to keep them spotless. Which is hard. I’d happily buy a 112 without self deploy. Getting stuff repaired is hard and costly when you have to freight them to and from.

Haven't had a problem with my one and I swap it between the two boats that have quick release fitted to them. One is a very tight fit and the other is good. Will have to wait and see what happens

Spoke to ……. and he reckons that’s just how they are.

Change shops.

Only a limited number of places where ill-fitting components can allow play to occur.

I'd pull the bottom teflon plate off the MG base, assemble them together one-by-one and then start looking for wobbles in the 3 main components. Vessel mount, puck, u shaped s/steel pin.

I think NBN's on the right track.

I have a XI5 MG. Only annoying thing is that when I put it on anchor lock the bl..dy thing turns itself around twice before anchoring itself.

I don't know if its simply a case of not synchronising every time I put the motor on. Anybody found that?

Ron, mine does a half turn but then rectifies when pinpoint deployed.

You must have ordered the whirling dervish model..

Think you're right NBN

I'll have to give it the Corporal Jones (from Dad's Army) treatment. ("Dervishers don't like cold steel up 'em").

Went out in mate's boat with MG yesterday. It behaved like your's on spotlock.
