Trailer brakes and corrugations

Post by bryfx »

Hi Guys,

I've just returned from a 6 week boating and fishing trip to the NT.
Absolutely awesome, loved every minute of it.
Spent 10 days out on the Wessel Islands, so had to traverse Arnhem Land.

But after inspecting my trailer after 12000kms (around 1500 dirt), I've got caliper issues again.
Had the same problem years back on a cape york trip with around 3000km of dirt.

Basically the brake pad rattles so much it makes a groove in the caliper, preventing the pad from moving in and out.
The pad has the appropriate anti-rattle spring, which atleast this time kept the pad in the caliper. (last trip the pad wore a groove inside the wheel rim!).

Heres a pic to illustrate.

Do you guys have any suggestions on a disc brake setup that will not fail after some corrugations?

Thanks
Bry

Wish I could offer something, all my rough road trailers didn't have brakes.

Replace the whole calipers, new design has bolts holding the pads in place

Ive had to replace my brake calipers a couple of times over the years due to wear caused by rattling brake pads. I think the key is to try to keep your brakes adjusted up as much as possible to minimise the pad movement. It only takes a minute or two to do each side and also allows you to check your other suspension components before they break or fall off!!!

Havnt really tried them out yet, but can’t be any worse then the ones like yours

Can’t find a better picture. I got them from Btc. K
