Many, many years ago my Bro-in-law was a teacher in the area. Another teacher at his school was a gun firsher and kept meticulous records. I got a phone call from B-i-l saying the Gunn had checked his records and 'this thu night' the conditions were identical to a "good night" he had had there previously.....

"Be at the second lamp post on the jetty at 8.00pm..."

B-I-L and I were there at around 7:15 and nothing was happening.... at 7:55 the Gunn arrived and took position alongside...

AT about 8:01 all hell broke loose..... Tommy Ruffs galore (herring to you foreigners)


We fished until about 11.00pm coz B-I-L had to work next day--- I was on holidays...

I was up til around 5.00am cleaning fish.. with a ring of about 20 cats around me for the scraps...

a part from the jetty fishing PB is a 'gateway' to upper St Vinvents Gulf with generally good boat fishing in the region..... apart from the damned bans we currently endure...

Funny that with the tommy ruffs, I remember seeing clouds of them under Rapid Bay jetty back in the day, but they often wouldn't bite.

We fished Port Giles jetty at night and they would be in a frenzy, hook three at a time, along with chow and slimy macks. Great fun.

Shame about the snapper ban, stock obviously wasn't well managed.

Been there done that so to speak and some good times were spent at Corny Point.
Used to camp in under a cave ledge for years as a kid before it collapsed and spent the nights shooting rabbits and foxes with the old man, cousins and uncles. Fishing, snorkelling and walking the reefs and holes. Rabbit stews, fish dinners, crab and squid.. endless. Port Vincent was a Christmas holiday booked for a few weeks every year for many years. Walking the back beach reef and hand picking 40 cm Gars out of the rock pools before the birds got em as the tide went out was fun but Blue Ringed Octopus were everywhere.

i hear there’s a 3 year waiting list for some of the caravan parks out that way now.

some good times were spent at Corny Point

Funny you should say that, I had my best-remebered camping trip with my late father at Corny Point decades ago. He had just bought a Valiant Charger. We camped near the lighthouse, slept on some sort of spongy low shrub that was growing everywhere, I guess not very environmentally friendly but we slept well.

Bloke who came with us speared a strongfish and got some abalone, we ate the abalone but it was like chewing leather. Can't remember what happened to the strongie but it was huge.

Caught my first fish on a lure during that trip, a big flathead. Great memories.

Three year waiting lists eh, blows me away when people say we don't need population control.
