The 2027 wet season?

Images here show current June ocean surface heat anomaly, also the June heat anomaly before the near record El Nino of 1997/98, and the anomaly during the 1997/98 El Nino.

You can see there's way more heat in the ocean now than back in June 1997.

Pundits are tipping a record El Nino for 2026/27 and it looks like the ocean is already well ahead of the June 1997 progression. Having said that, the heat is everywhere, check out the Mediterranean and Japan.

Given the NT's huge wet season this year, it will be interesting to see what happens for Wet 2027.

The biggest recorded El Nino was apparently 1877 so big El Ninos have happened before climate change accelerated.

Today's SST .... the El Nino patch is extending west as predicted.

Latest heat anomaly map showing El Nino growth, and the El Nino data graph ... kapow!

From what I've read the actual implications re weather are unclear, but usually means dry for south-east Australia.

Should be good fishing off the back of last wet no matter what we get this year

Yes, supercharged Top End fishing for a while yet, I expect the cherabin mass would have increased in the rivers, along with everything else.

Might be another record Wet on the way, who knows.

Yeah just learned that a high pressure system lowers the tide and so one of the reasons for storm surges in cyclones is the very low pressure lifting the water- interesting!

Climatereanalyzer map here shows the El Nino development Aug 2, 2026. Also a large ocean heat anomaly has developed east of Japan.

While the El Nino area may be record warm, if everything else is warmer the temperature differential is less, so who knows what the weather will bring.

Bordeaux region in France apparently had more days of 40C this year than it has had in total for the past 100 years ... https://x.com/Met4CastUK/status/2083250341840027986 ... not good if you like French plonk.

Southern England warmest July yet recorded ... https://www.theguardian.com/environment ... ords-began

Top End may well get another big Wet for 2027 (or not), but south-eastern Australia is likely to be dry this summer.

Feels like it's starting to warm up here already

Today's Climatereanalyzer SST anomaly map is here, almost a month on from the last one I posted.

Record El Nino water still warming up, but most of the globe is up, huge hot patch anomaly around Japan has grown, with world's oceans at hottest point yet recorded ... https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08-25/ ... /107073982

Still don't know what it means for Top End Wet 2027, but for the Aussie south-east next year will possibly be a bad fire season. Dry and windier.

Tassie's farmed Atlantic salmon likely to be hit hard this summer as the water is already warming up off southern Tasmania. Reckon they'll be farming kingfish eventually.

Could be a great year ahead for Top End fishing.

Given what's happening in WA and SA, the Top End already looks like a great place to be for 2027 fishing.

And if you look at the map the Top End is one of the few places with 'normal' sea temperatures.

It is especially so when you consider the USA's "leadership" was doing everything possible to make it worse.
