Mal liked his trout fishing, RIP ... http://www.news.com.au/national/politic ... 7270673682

Did many great things in politics, but especially well remembered for being found dazed and wandering a Memphis hotel lobby with no pants on ... that was the fisho in him I guess :D

I reckon probably more for....... life wasn't meant to be easy

These are actually words by George Bernard Shaw in 1921 when (following immediately after WW1) life was indeed very very difficult for the majority of people in the world especially in Europe.

Bit stiff a man like Fraser having a catch phrase such as that one......
He was born with a silver spoon & probably never experienced anything close to hardship...?

Have to agree Hemi. I heard that he had the quote put on his ties.

His nickname was "The Squire".

For many years I believed he was an simply arrogant SOB even after he left political stage.

In later times, I thought that at least he stood for something which is different to our current crop of pollies of all persuasions.

Thats true..

The doco on tv the other night about Fraser was an eye opener... I didnt know too much about him.
As you say... He stood for something.

Im nearly 40... As a young fella obviously I remember Hawke in power...
But i dont think my generation and younger people now have ever seen a real government!!
I think politics and governments since Fraser and most of Hawkes time has seen an end to any kind of stable & meaningful leadership....????
They definitely were the Giants in australian politics....

They had some nicknames.
Robert Menzies was 'Pig Iron" Bob.
Harold Holt (the one that drowned) was Pantsman Harry
William McMahon was Big Willy ( a reference to his wife).
Whitlam was Cough-Drop
Fraser was the Squire (or The Crazy Grazier)
Bob Hawke was Silver Bodgie
Keating was The Undertaker; and
Howard was Little Johnnie.

Can't go without a political joke.

After the sacking of Whitlam, the 2 most despised people in Aus for years were the Governor General John Kerr and Malcolm Fraser.

One day Fraser and Whitlam both happened to visit the parliamentary urinal at the same time.

Malcom looks across and is very impressed by the size of the equipment" Gough is displaying.

"Gee Gough" he says "I know we've got some differences but can you give me some hints on how to get some equipment that size.? I'll impress Tammy (Malcom's wife) then".

"Sure" says Gough. "Every night just before you go to bed, knock your old fella 3 times on the end of the bed. It'll grow in size very quickly".

Mal can't wait to start.

That night he gets home late from Parliament, gets into his pjs, tiptoes into the bedroom and gives his old fella 3 hard knocks on the end of the bed.

"Is that you Gough?" Tammy calls out.
