Re: Eating raw oysters
Years ago we were investigating the dumping of 130 000 l of raw sewage into a NSW river.
Our scientists came up to take samples etc and were horrified to learn that so called smart people would actually eat fresh raw oysters from the local producers.
They spent several hours one night over several beers telling us exactly how they feed and on what – in a nutshell, they eat poop
There are reasons that the producers have to clean them in ozone and fresh water for a week so it kills the bugs.
I was always told to sniff an oyster before eating it, if its off, you will know. But the scientists reminded us that you cant determine if they are free of bacteria and viruses just by smelling them
I was put off eating oysters for a long time.
One person died from eating oysters from the rocks around the same time
Anyway, I love oysters - but the words of the scientists still ring in my ears whenever I do.

Re: Eating raw oysters
Once upon a time you could eat them off the rocks without much risk ... now only in pristine places is it safe.
